I've lost track of how many Bug projects Steve and I have been involved in. We now have 7 Bugs between us. The latest is my '74 we got off craigslist, running and registered for $500. The kid we got it from started to Baja it by sawing the stock fenders and rear apron. Yesterday we had tires installed. The fronts are new Wrangler A/T's for $160 and the rears are used GeoStar's $80. Today we cut the front apron for the Bug eye from the '62/'70 Baja from this build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=349837&highlight= then swapped the beam from this build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4188186#4188186 Tomorrow we'll finish installing the new ball joints and try to sort out the sputtering carb. Here's some pics:

Getting ready for the big cut! Front fenders off the '62/'70

What would a Baja build be without a Saws-All

My turn!

TaaDaa!

Cut and turned beam off the '66

As Steve was pressing in the first ball joint this bolt snapped and hit Steve in the ear! No blood just painful. Ouch! More tomorrow........

wow I'm pretty close to you.. I saw that bug on craigslist too and was actually thinking about going to go get it. I'm glad it went to a good home though :D

well maybe we can "finally" get someroad time in instead of drive-way time time, eh Kenny?

Bearkiller Sat Mar 06, 2010 7:24 pm

Steve replaced the ball joints and packed the bearings. We broke out the Saws-All again and made room for the the Bugeye pieces.

Hey! How did my bike get in the frame?

simmbad Sun Mar 07, 2010 12:43 am

Looking good, now we just need to paint the fenders and hood.

plug in the lights and get some turn signals on it.

Should have it drivable again on Sunday. hope for no rain

OK. Today I broke out the rattle cans and laid down some satin black on the fenders, nose and hood. Steve thrashed on the wiring installing LED taillights and trying to sort out what the PO had done to the wiring. What a mess!

I installed the front sportbike turn signals and spotlights off my Valkyrie.

Yes another bug with wiring problems. Oh well one more day of work, good thing these things are easy to work on.

We found a number of melted wires, and new wiring just laid out on the flooring...

Monday should be a great done to wire the bug....

She is looking good. After you get the wiring fixed there's only one thingleft, road or off-road trip.

Something to be said for satin black..... Bravo! Looking good so far!

simmbad Wed Mar 10, 2010 11:10 pm

Well finally done with the wiring, just waiting for Kenny to post the photos and videos

Here are a couple before and after pics and some vids of the shake down run. I ordered an exhaust last night and Steve has a roll cage for it. Next stop, offroad baby!

great backyard/frontyard build. the wiring look greats and simple (the way it should be) hard to tell from the video but RPMs seem a bit high or timing too far advanced. i am sure your still testing. are you going to reindex the rear a little higher?

simmbad Thu Mar 11, 2010 11:17 am

Yeah, we found a vacuum cap that was rotted and sucking air, the PO had wired the choke half open.

A bit of tuning still to be done but it running a lot better now.

just remember cops like to get up on your ass just to read your plate. that would be bad to hit him with your back up lights. i have a buddy that flashed an oncoming car with his brights thinking their brights were on, they flashed him back, then he flashed him his kc's then they flashed him their blue and reds, he got a nasty ticket.

is that a bad sign that one broke when you dropped it??

awesome build. no huge budgets or crazy performance parts, just using what you have and making a bug rock.....it looks good man.
