Alright that's good.
So what are some good carb suggestions?
I have been told to be wary of webbers because of adjustment screws backing out. My co-worker has kadrones (spelling?) and likes them. |

Not sure that they were saying they were better, just to be careful.
Are those mainly the only 2 types? Any others worth mentioning?
And is there a specific model that goes well with 1600 motor? |

kadrons are too tall for a type 3 so, these are out
stock solex pdsit's work great, with them you can use the stock oil bath air cleaner;
ICTs (real Webers, not chinese copies) are fine (get the good quality kit), but you can't use the stock air filter, which means you will be sucking hot air.
of course if you get the right short manifolds and airfilters you can run Weber IDFs or Dellorto DRLAs (you also suck hot air but then they can feed almost any size engine) |

I was about to say that I had never heard of one of Jake's motor's with kadron's.
Here's Supa's list of carby's for a stockish type3 (take it with a grain of salt cause I HATE carbs)
1. Solex PDSIT's
2. Weber ICT's
...and that's it, I won't ever recommend chinese knock off's for anything (AKA EMPI garbage)...period |

| DRLA dells are wonderful, but for a stock 1600 the stock solex PDSIT are easy enough to find and use the cold air intake with the stock oil bath. |

If you didn't hate carbs so much you could read up on the v.2 HPMX's (EMPI IDF clone). I never could get my ICT's right.

I am not ashamed of the EMPI carbs at all. We have learned the ins and outs of these carbs and have ONLY used them since 2008. Thats when I tested twenty pair of "genuine" carbs for another company and found that 70% of them leaked fuel internally and could not be repaired.
Here we use these carbs on our personal engines and we race with them and I can count my bad experiences with them since 2008 on one hand. No, you can't get out of the box performance with them. This car drives like it has a set of Dellortos on it and that is not an exaggeration.
BTW- these are the V2 HPMX units, they are much better out of the box than the older versions. I do not endorse EMPI products, however these are great foundations to start with. |

Yeah I don't like carbs either. I admit I am a n00b at carbs, I can't see or understand whats going on half the time. At least with EFI I have a great understanding of the system. And the fact EFI runs heaps better than carbs in most cases |

Root_Werks bought New EMPI carbs for his Monster square & new SP2 and is quite happy with them! 8)
I've never had trouble with carbs. It's usually a speck of dirt in a jet/orifice. I love to disassemble them in a drain pan with gas/paint brush/air etc and clean/reassemble them with the same gaskets. Proper jetting is easy if you have a selection of sizes. Worn throttle plate bushing is about the only thing that wears out. |

This is among the most ridiculous posts I've seen on this site. For all the reasons not to buy Chinese, their government is #1? |

Nothing to do with patriotism, just caught me off guard that red fear is still around in 2012. Besides, I mentioned government in particular because that's all it is. I'd be willing to bet the overwhelming majority of Chinese involved in the VW aftermarket are a) not Communist personally, b) assembling parts for an American company (EMPI, everyone's favorite example). Just because someone lives in a country does not mean they subscribe to the government's philosophy. Closer to home: any Republican is ideologically counter to the POTUS, does that mean they should stop buying American goods?
....you decide  |

I grew up in the cold war and I have zero tolerance for communists, I have been to their countries and I see our country heading down that road right now, plus CHINESE PARTS ARE THE LOWEST OF LOW WHEN IT COMES TO QUALITY! I wish, I wish, I wish everyone understood that. Pre-chinese aftermarket junk parts, it was Brazilian and Mexican parts that were the junk parts. Back to my main point, I'm not going to support that commie country any more then I have too.
Your partially right, I'll take it a step further the line between dem and repub is blurred right now. As far as party affiliation I'm a conservative independent. POTUS is really a marxist more then anything else. |

This is getting political, and fast. So let the message to the original poster and owner of the new Squareback be: avoid cheap, low quality parts! Type 3 generally require good used pieces since the majority of their specific parts aren't made any more. Means you have to look a little harder, but will likely spend less and get something that fits. Enjoy the hunt!
