View original topic: 66 steering column bearing

I'm reassembling my steering column and can't remember if the bearing has to get pressed into the column or not. I sure had to fight it to get it out, but now it's the old "I wasn't paying attention when I beat the thing out with a hammer" syndrome. Is it supposed to sit on top of the column? It sure seems like it, but can I get some confirmation?

Nevermind. Figured it out.

What did you figure out? Did yours look like this? I have a 66ghia and wonder if they are the same as the beetle?

If I have all the bearings can I stick it all back together with grease and re-use?

I'm not sure. My question was regarding how the bearing actually fits in the steering column.

So this should be one piece and mine is fubared? Of course assuming the beetle and ghia are the same.

How did you get it apart?

I was hanging it up and when I stuck the coat hanger through it pushed it out.
The other half is in the column still.

Honestly, I don't know. I just straight-up replaced mine because it had so much play.

yes and yes. repack and regrease and reuse if you have all bearing balls.
