So I was putting some shakedown miles on my 36hp tonight. Went to a buddies house about 10 miles away and it was fine. Coming home I was about a mile from the house and all hell breaks lose. It lost power and started smoking. The inside filled with smoke and the oil light came on. Limped it home and popped the decklid. There was oil on the right side of the generator stand below the oil filler hole, a little bit sprayed up on the generator backing plate and some on the cylinder head tin. Nothing was on the inside of the decklid.
Any ideas? |

| Could be several things. But whatever caused it is looks like an engine out job for a thorugh investigation.Might have been a leak from the oil cooler or pressure switch. The smoke was probably oil leaked on the exhaust. If the light came on at speed its generally too late. |

| I pulled the motor and all the tins so I could clean it up and powdercoat everything. There was a good bit of oil under the generator and down the generator stand. Almost like it came up out of the oil filler tube. Is that even possible? The oil is on the add mark on the dipstick so im guessing that is why the light is on. |

| Its possible that excess crankcase pressure can throw the oil out.Either worn rings or scored cylinders can cause this.I had a type 3 that did this and found a valve randomnly sticking .The engine used to throw the oil up the breather and into the air filter via the vent pipe.I remember coming home from holiday one year and having to tip the oil from the air cleaner back into the engine to make the journey home :) |
