I finally got my Manta Montage back on the road.
Removed the old square headlights, and installed 100 watt, small projection lamps.
I also installed PIAA driving lamps on the front.

Pretty nice car. I've always liked the looks of these, and with the VW engine and chassis, you can have much of the look of the McLaren M6GT for a fraction of the purchase price, maintenance cost and insurance bills of an original or even the replica made by ASC in the mid-80s.

If we could see a side view and some pics of the interior, engine and dash, and maybe even a build thread, that would be wonderful. :)

Looks great. I like the dual wiper setup. Not being familiar with FL laws and inspection processes - are those headlights even legal? Don't they have to be dimmable, especially if they are 100w?

I'm trying to scrounge up some more photos. I've been working on this for the past seven years.

As far as the headlights, Florida doesn't have state inspections anymore. That's one on the main reasons I left Philly back in 1981. They've got way too many rules and regulations up there. The first thing I did when I moved down here, was to build a home made,"street legal" VW rail buggy out of sheet steel and water pipe, all welded together, to express my freedom from those damn PA state inspections. It had no body, no fenders, no windshield, (glasses required though) no turn signals, (hand signals are acceptable) My headlights were cheap, K-mart, bolt on, plastic lens driving lamps. Try taking one of those down a Pennsylvania highway. As soon as you passed the first cop, he would have his whole police force out there writing you tickets for everything they could think of.
True, my headlights don't dim. I made a lenses out of translucent bathroom glass that diffuses the light so it doesn't glare at on coming traffic. My HIGH beams are the PIAA lamps in the front. Each lamp has a high intensity yellow fog bulb, a high intensity blue driving bulb, and a 20 watt yellow turn signal bulb.
This car is not a daily driver. I just drive it around town on sunny weekends during the day, to local car shows.
I just have to be careful people don't run into me, because they are so busy staring at the car, they're not watching where they are driving.

By the way, back in the 70's, I used to be a Certified Pennsylvania Auto Mechanic, that inspected cars every day. So, I know a little bit about all those money making laws.

:D Be glad you're not here now with the 'enhanced' inspection stations for cars just like this. I'm dreading when I have to take my Sterling in for it's first inspection and VIN tagging...

But the Manta looks great. It's one of my favorite style cars!

That reminds me of a car that was in a series years ago. It did all kinds of jumping through the air stunts. I looked it up. It was a Cody Coyote and the show was Hardcastle and McCormick.

There were several companies that made fiberglass replicas of the the McLaren M6GT. The makers of Hardcastle & McCormick bought several Manta Montage bodies, modified them and renamed them Coyote's for the TV show.
The real McLaren's had several different cars that were raced in the Can-Am series in the 60's and 70's. This is not a Volkswagen engine, but here is a real McLaren M8F going around the track.

I wouldn't mind having a rear end set up like this...

Problem is... a VW engine would strain, to deal with this amount of torque..
