View original topic: Plastic hose extension slipped off gas can ......

I was topping off/ filling my wife's 68 VW this afternoon (been sitting for a couple of months When), with our new 5 gallon gas can, the detachable 6 inch white plastic gas can tube came off the gas can and fell into the filler neck/gas tank...this flexible tube is about 1 inch in diameter....
Needle nose pliers and various other attempts and foul words lead me to my question...Can I safely leave the damn thing where it is...either jammed in the filler neck near the entrance to the gas tank or actually in the tank...or must I try to get the damn thing out?

Between the filler neck and the gas tank there is a oval shapped rubber boot on this car, attached on either end with C type clamps, but the rubber seems old and somewhat hard and I stopped after trying for awhile to remove this hose, , fearing it was going to crack, split, and with my luck I was not going to be able to find a replacement.

My mechanical knowledge and expertise is laughably small, my ego is damaged nevertheless and I would appreciate your opinions....
