Hey everybody ..
My 72 Ghia has the usual cracked dash pad through the speaker grille. I purchased the KGPR RPSQ dash pad...how they heck do you get the nylon nuts off the old pad on the end of each side? I really don't want to remove the glove box or speedo...all the others came off fine...I just hope the new one fits! Any other tricks for popping off the old and replacing with new?
Thanks much!! |

Don't fight it. Remove the speedo & glovebox insert.
As with many other things VW, the time wasted trying to
do a shortcut will be more than if you just remove the
parts in the way to gain good access.
Plus the aggravation factor of trying to do a work-around. ](*,) |

Nice looking car. Great color.
Those nuts are pretty difficult to get at . I was able to get at them with a ratchet type box wrench and do it. It has an adjutable swivel on the box end. You can buy them at Sears.
When I put the new cover in I used wing nuts in that area as the nylon nuts won't work on the new pad anyway - they were a different size. The wing nuts made things go much easier |

Just curious....were you pleased with this dash replacement? I too have a '72 with exactly the same crack!
Thank you. |

Yes the dash was replaced this past weekend. I think it is good quality and looks great... a few issues with installation...
removal of the old dash is awful trying to get in there to remove the end nylon nuts... it can be done however!
You have to remove the metal dash vents to get the pad out.. this is a challenge with the windshield in place.
It took a bit of an effort to get the new dash pad to fit.. but it did.
The challenge then was to get the dash vents back in place and screwed back to the metal frame of the car.. I'm still working on that part.
I'll take a pic of the new dash pad and post soon. |
