My latest project, this is my design:

Other than the Webber 44s and 1 5/8 exhaust the long block is stock vanagon.

One of the top links is a video of it running- Very smooth.
It's going in my buggy first for some ntesting when the snow clears.
it will end up in a 73 bug once that's finnished.
There is a lot more info over at the "shop talk forums" which seems to be slow lately. |

I love it. Wether it works or not, that's awesome.
Where does the air off the radiator end up going (when installed in a car) so that it doesn't recirculate?
Do you have a fanclutch on that fan too, or is it blowing the air the other way? Alternator bearings may love it too much, but it's still cool. |

I am curious about the installation in a beetle aswell. Possibly remove and box the package tray? Ducted air?
Regardless, that is kick ass! Job well done =D> =D> |

In a beetle the air will come from above the transaxle, the back side of the radiator will be sealed at top and sides against the firewall to prevent mixing air, there is about a 4 inch gap. The hot air will exit where the rear breast tin would go and through the deck lid vents. I have considered small removable partitions for cooler air to the air filters.
The engine is actually much quieter than an aircooled, the fan makes some noise but isn't too loud.
Running on the stand for about an hour the thermostat is open and you can easily hold the pipe that returns fom the cooled side of the radiator.
The cooling system is much simpler than the stock wasser and it self- bleeds air when filled.
Although I haven't installed it in the car yet I am 100% confident cooling will not ne an issue.
The radiator is a modified aftermarket Honda one from E-bay and a BMW 318 thermostat. The alternator is a stock aircooled one shortened about 2 1/2 inches and I balanced the fan. Fan is the smallest puller flex fan I could find that has been made slightly smaller. |

Next thing, he well be writing a manual on how to do it!!!
Like I said on the T-4 forum, he just made another branch to the VW Tree.
Something with the name Joe. Joe VW, Joe From Oregon Performance and Joe, the T-4 conversion guy. |

Thanks Joe,
I didn't want to put it out there untill I had it running.
Now I need to get it into my buggy for testing.
Getting good feedback is inspiring to get it done, although the snow is still piled to the roof line of my barn :x I'll need a snowmobile suit for test drives :)
It would be nice to simplify it further to make it easy for others to build one with less tig welding. But there is still testing to be done.
Next, is to install a pilot bearing in an early type4 flywheel and bolt it on. |

| i have seen this design during it's r+d it's been an intresting evolution.there are lots of innovative ideas being developed.i look foreward to see the engine installed in a vw at a show and some temp readings from highway use.as this is a stock wb the potential for high perfrmance applications seems very positive.good work joe |
