The 009 and 34 PICT-3 is not a good combination. You should use the SVDA ditributor.
I don't think this is your main problem, though.
In case you still look for air leaks, beware one source that many forget on late models: The thermostatic valve and the vacuum flap in the air filter. Try to block off the tube (either on the carb or on your intake) and see if that helps. |

I have a freshly rebuilt SVDA to install in this bug, as soon as I have the carb problem solved. I agree with you, and fully intend to replace the dizzy - but I want to solve the problem before I try to change it, as I want the rest of the engine running as well as possible before I make that swap.

Curiouser and curiouser.
I got out the SVDA, which has a SECOND vac inlet (I think) on the back of the same can that has the first inlet, which is in the usual location. Is this actually a DVDA, or do I block that one, or just leave it open?

I think you can use the DVDA. You need an extra vacuum outlet on your carb to connect it. If not, leave the dizzy vac inlet open. I read somewhere that the function of the extra vacuum clock is to make the timing return more gently back to "idle position". Not sure.
Read this - timing si different with DVDA: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=251672 |
