View original topic: Only runs pouring gas down carb

Hey Guys,
I just purchased a 1970 squareback. A lady in her fifties owned it and it has sat in her back yard since 2001. I just pulled it into garage to look at it. The fuel injection is long gone and it has a single carb sticking up thru the rear cargo area (dont yell at me, I didnt do it!!) It has a univeral electric fuel pump near the tank. I drained the tank and put new fuel in it. The car will start and run for a few seconds if I pour fuel into the carb. There is fuel getting to carb. I noticed that the vacuum line that runs from vacuum advance on distributor is not connected to a vacuum t fitting. My question is should the vacuum advance be connected on this motor?? Would this vacuum leak at the t fitting prevent the car from pulling fuel into the motor via the carb??? What should I look at to get car to run without me pouring gas in the carb?? Any replies would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like a carb that is full of crap.

esp. if you put NEW gas in the tank
it probably stirred up the stuff in the tank
like rust

check ALL the jets and if you can get a Mech fuel pump

AND check to see if the needle and seat (where the fuel comes into the carb above the float is opening and closing properly
make sure that there is a good bit of gas IN the Bowl of the carb

Get 32 PDSITs or a stock F.I.

Ok guys, I pulled the carb off and took it apart. I will hose all the passages down tomorrow with some carb cleaner and compressed air. Ill let you know if that works.

Thanks for the advice guys. I cleaned the carb up and put it back on. She purrs like a kitten now. The only difficult part was I had to take the carb back off several times to get the float adjusted correctly. Thanks again.
