So, I'm just a few hours worth of sanding away from being ready for paint. I've painted a few cars before with good results, so I'm gonna give it a go. But, I havea few questions for the group:

What color should I go with? Interior is Brown and nice enought to make me want to keep it that way. I'm kind of leaning towards red. The plan is to squirt it and sell it to fund other projects... So, if you could have your Baja any color, what would it be?

How much paint to buy? I'm thinking two quarts should be enough... or should I buy a gallon to be safe? I plan on squirting the shell, doors, fenders, engine cover, hood and nose. Two coats should do it. I don't plan on shooting the engine cage, front bumper, or side bars.

I'll post pics of the sanded and prepped bug in a day or two...

I vote for forest green or sahara tan/brown

white will hide imperfections the best....

primer. let the buyer decide what color he wants

Too long ago since painted my bug but when i did my ghia i used a nearly a gallon for two coats and i was still lite in areas. Probably fine if your just flipn' it. I used a HVLP gun so i didnt have much lost to overspray . definitely not a pro here but if i go to paint my bug i'm gonna get atleast a gallon and a half and or go with a clear coat.

i'm partial to red but i think white can make most cars look good and the buyer can dress it up to their style with some pinstripe or stickers

do a price comparison. I have noticed that for only a dollar or two over the cost of 2 quart size containers, you can buy a gallon. a couple bucks for piece of mind and twice the paint. thats my two pennies anyway.

Here is the tally so far:

Green - 1
Tan - 1
White - 2
Red - 1
Primer- 1

I figured white might be a popular choice.... but.... I need more votes!

I'm pricing paint today. Napa, Sherwin Williams, and Metro Paint are on my list. Anyone have a better source in the Portland / Vancouver area?

If you are looking for votes, I'd go with white as well.

from what i hear white is best to hide the bad stuff. so white for me.

Flat Olive Drab...

In 2 weeks, I'm painting mine sunburnt orange. It's the color Dodge uses on thier trucks. It's almost copper. I recomend it for anything.

I would buy a gallon so that the buyer will have color matching paint left over incase he decides to paint other parts for the car.

83_WabbitGTI Fri Mar 12, 2010 3:18 pm

^^^ That's a killer color.

andychrist77 Fri Mar 12, 2010 3:42 pm

can't go wrong with primer,

vdub411 Fri Mar 12, 2010 4:00 pm

I would say primer also. Leave it up to them to paint it whatever they want. You don't want to put to much time into it if you are just gonna flip it anyway. Maybe even get crazy and do a black or red primer.

White or Tan do not show dirt as bad as red or green.
I will go with tan, and balance the white.

I suppose it did as I am looking for color suggestions!

Current Tally is:

Green - 1
Tan - 2
White - 4
Red - 1
Primer - 2
Orange - 1 ( or two if you count Sloboatnova's second vote.)
Olive drab - 1

So far it's looking like white primer is the consensus! LOL! Maybe with Tan scallops.... hmmm...

Any more votes?

Russ Wolfe Fri Mar 12, 2010 8:40 pm

Camo it with all of those colors. :D

I had a GMC with "pewter" paint. It was actually tan. I never wash my truck, and it never looked dirty.
