View original topic: 28 PCI ball check valve?

I'm rebuild a carb, and when I pulled out the brass plug noted that there was no upper ball for the check valve.

I'm wondering what the original was made out of and does weight matter? Since all the other removable items inside are plastic or brass, I'm a little concerened about just dropping a steel ball bearing in, even though it fits just fine. Should I try a copper plated BB instead?

The carb has been on the car since day 1, I'm figuring the ball went missing during a rebuil by a mechanic about 10 yrs ago.

I threw in a copper plated BB and will see how it goes

The earliest 28PCI check valve balls were in fact steel, but VW changed them to brass not too long afterward. If the steel ball ever corroded, it wouldn't seal as well. Dunno about the weight, but at that size, it should work OK so long as you have the right diameter.

I took out the lower ball valve, and it was nice shiny brass.
Figuring that the line from the pump to the carb is copper plated steel, the BB should do the job.
