When I put in the Thing beam, everything worked fine. The problem is that since the last run I've got some weird play. If you marked the steering wheel at 12 o'clock, you would see that after a left hand turn, the mark would be at 11 o'clock. After a right hand turn the mark ends up at 1 o'clock. It's a pretty new German box, not Brazilian. Awhile back, I had some slop in the steering and it turned out to be that piece between the steering box that attaches to the coupler. The splines were shot so I replaced it. I figured that was the problem again. So I took out the gas tank and welded that piece to the steering box arm. That didn't fix the problem. Think I wasted the box?

the problem is going to be where the pitman arm connects to the sector shaft, the splined shaft that exits the steering box.

What do you think the issue is? It looks like it's on right. The splines looked good when I installed it.

My guess would be the inside of the pitman arm, are you absolutely sure the tensioning bolt is fully tightened?

You also need to make sure it is the right bolt, the sector shaft has a relief that bolt slides through, you should have to slightly drive the bolt into place, good snug fit, if not, chances are wrong bolt.

Sorry, misinformation! VW steering box sector shaft does NOT have a relief for the pinch bolt, all the work is done by the pinch compression. It would seem to me the steering wheel should not be able to "re-clock" unless the pitman arm is moving on the shaft. Have someone else work the wheel while you watch the joint. If it is solid then you must have a stripped component inside the gearbox itself.
