Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone can suggest any fairly agressive tire that will mount on a stock 15" rim?
Is there many people out there running the stock steel rims on their Bajas?
thanks

| Super Swamper makes some that would work. One size I can think of is 215/85/15 which is a radial. They have a bunch of sizes. |

WOW! i have 195 65 15's on the rims now and the sidewall bulge out quite a bit.
maybe ill have to try those. they are the 4 bolt 15" rims by the way. |

Here are three types of tires. From L to R
Nanco 700 15 Bias tire on 4.5 inch wide rim 29 1/2 inch tall
TSL Super Swamper 215 85 15 on a 6 inch rim 28 9/16 inch tall
Generic Snow Tire 215 75 15 on 6 inch rim 27 5/8 inch tall
The Super Swamper will fit on a 4.5 and 5 inch wide rim. |

I would think not on the front. They should fit on the rear with out any problems.
Summit Racing on line has the best price I could find when I purchased these earlier this year. |

Quite frankly, aftermarket rims with more positive offset to get the tire away from the suspension and body.
Do you really need that agressive of a tire on the front for your driving or is it like me, for "the look". |

haha yes, actually, thr front tires would be for the look. i suppose i dont have to go as agressive, i was just thinking the little regular road tires look too dainty for an offroad vehicle and i would probably want something a little more agressive.
and i was hoping to save a bit of money using my stock rims and just going more agressive tires. |

ok well in short. Does anyone know what the largest tire size would be that will fit on a stock 4 bolt rim on a stock bug?
thanks.

| Bigger tires will radically change the final drive. You can fit 235/75-15 on the rims but can your engine and transmission handle it? Think class 11 at the baja 1000. That large of a tire will cut down the turning radius as well. Some of it depends on your ring and pinion and whether you have lifted the rear end. I would lend you my tires for a test drive, but your location is a bit vague. Seven time zones in canada, eh. |

Ah true true. Well, i want to have good offroading tires which will perform well on the trails but i also dont want the car to look goofy with little street tires and a bugeye baja kit. It looks good now with the 14" turbine rims and tires, but i didnt want to destroy the rims with ricks and such so i put them on my street bug. just trying to find something to replace them and save a bit of cash by mounting them on the stock 15". |

From http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=351210
Quote: WHEEL SIZES:
OEM is 15" x 4.5" or 15" x 5.5"
you can run the 700x15 or 235/75 on the OEM rims as seen on most "Baja" fronts and "Class 11".
It would be in your best interest to run 6" wide rims with these tires to prevent folding the tire over on a hard corner.
A general thought for safe tire use is to not go more than 3" over your rim width with the tire's section width
i.e. a 235/75R15 tire has a section width of 9" on a 6" rim (this is the 3" limit).
Now from what I've read the class 11 guys can't do much with their front suspension but 'cut and turn'. I think the going rate now is 9/16's of an inch? Maybe 5/8's. But I guess a lot of them run the 235/75 -15 with full fenders!
This is a bugeye running 31x10.5's on the back and 235/75 AT's on the front with what appears to be a stock rim:
I myself am just waiting to put some 235/75's BFG AT's on the front and 30 or 31's on the back of mine (with , and will tell you/show you what it turns out like when I finally get back to SC). I also run a pretty much stock front end, though I am planning a cut and turn and spindle turn ASAP.

Now as far as tire CHOICE goes... well, there's a lot of discussion about that around this board, but if you are going strictly for looks the Definity AT and MT look pretty bad-ass and are about as cheap as you can get in an AT/MT tire. They are available from Pep Boys in the sizes you need.
AT on a bug: (I think this is AZ-BUGS)
M/T on a bug: (This is sxuxrxf class 11 look alike)

so the bugeye with the 235/75s up front, that would be with the stock beam width? doesnt look widened. Just wondering about when turning if the tires would rub the torsion arms.
ya, id like to see your once you get the tires on. |

I run the 7.00x15 tires on stock wheels up front. I flattened the lip of the pan in the fender well for clearance. I also adjusted the steering stops to prevent rubbing. I lost some turning radius, but not enough to notice off-road. On the street I just swing wide when parking it.
It still has the stock width too:

Love that! i got a couple questions though.
1. would the front wheels fit on the rear with no trouble/ whats the reason for running the different rears?
2. do you notice any loss in power having the engine move the larger tires.
3. is that stock suspension? beam not turned and rear shocks not reindexed?
thanks |
