From teh Wiki:
A double clutch (also called a double declutch) is a driving procedure primarily used for vehicles with an unsynchronized manual transmission. The double clutching technique involves the following steps:
The clutch pedal is pressed, the throttle is released, and the gearbox is shifted into neutral.
The clutch pedal is then released. As the engine idles with no load, the RPM will decrease until they are at a level suitable for shifting into the next gear.
The driver then depresses the clutch again and shifts into the next gear. The whole maneuver can, with practice, take no more than a fraction of a second, and the result is a very smooth gear change.
There are a few variations. I usually tap the gas when in neutral between the two gears, clutch out. I've always just done this for fun, though. |

I'll bet you that the synchronizing ring has either jammed onto the fourth gear hub or stuck to the 3-4 slider. Try this; with the engine turned off put the stick in fourth and abruptly knock it forward to neutral, without depressing the clutch. Do that a few times. Then put it fourth and roll backward with the clutch in and when it gets kinda faster let out the clutch, all with the engine off. Try that first then there are some while running and driving tricks to try and free it up.
Hi, thanks for the advice. I tried your two procedures with the same end result as before. I have found a freshly rebuilt transaxle locally and I have started the process of removing the engine and tranny. Not too upset about all this, I'll have a new tranny to match my new engine. |
