...that us in the rust belt are f*cked when it comes to trying to get a solid frame and a body.

I can find deals on beautiful, virtually rust-free rolling shells from down south, but then the $1000+ it would take to get it here makes it not even worth the effort. Damn.

What's the cheapest any of you have had a vehicle delivered for? Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

What wrong with paying $1000+ to get a rust free car shipped to you. You'll spend more than that on crappy reproduction sheet metal and welding to fix up a rusted car.

$1K to have a rust free shell shipped to you is worth each and every penny compared to the hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars it costs to fix a rusted shitheap.

or spend a little more on a truck and trailer and go get it yourself...

$900 to ship a Ghia from San Diego to Cincinnati. $600 to ship a bus from Naples, FL to Cincinnati. In either case, I could not have gone to get them for anywhere near that. I considered flying to Naples and driving the bus home, and for what air fare, gas, hotel and food would have cost... it was cheaper to ship.

$800 to ship an SUV from Houston to Cleveland, I flew down there to look at it, bought it, and had it shipped up. No big deal. Buying something down south and shipping it up is WELL worth the expense to get a rust free car. BTDTGTTS.

I towed 'Dubs with a tow bar many times back and forth round trip to FL and NC/SC without ever a problem.

By the way, are aware of the VW cruise in Brecksville May 1?

Good Luck!

I suppose this is true. Definitely the right choice as a good long-term investment. Just sounds like a lot to me right now. :?

And I did not know about that Bruce; looks like I have about a month and a half to see if mine will be in the condition to make it! I have high hopes to do a lot of things like that this summer.

Apart from the shipping issues and costs, will it be possible to keep a rust free bus from eventually turning into another rust bucket?

HotTinRoof Mon Mar 15, 2010 5:30 pm

New England isn't much better. Might I add you are also leaving out that you purchasing sight unseen - based only on pictures - and having your 'surprise' shipped up to you.

Round-trip flight to see car + shipping = uncomfortable money just to get something. I'm trying to search around close friends and family and keep final drive home within 12 hours + AAA :?

and I moved from CA just 2 years ago....

Have a local SAMBA person give you an onsite inspection.

I'm going to try my best! I've got my eye on a beaut down south...now I just have to earn the money to have it shipped!

If its near Tampa, I'll volunteer my services to go check it out and take pictures.

I've got my '74 bus from out west over 15 years ago and it's pretty much in the same condition as when I first got it. I wax it once a year and it gets stored over the winter months.
