I'm not sure of the technical name but it's the cover under the trans/drive flanges. Mine has 6 nuts and studs sticking out the side and I can't get my 930 flanges to fit without rubbing. The top pic is how I would like it to look and the bottom 2 pics are of my trans and the clearance issue. What I am hoping is I can remove the old 6 nuts/studs and use a different style cover. Is this possible and can anyone point me in the right direction on finding some?

That cover holds the outer race for the differential bearings.
They cannot be changed without a complete resetting of the differential.
What I would do, is get shorter studs, and get rid of the nyloc nuts that are on there now. Use 242 Loctite instead of the Nyloc.
Or, you could just replace the studs with bolts.

Ya' beat me to the punch!
Great info as usual!

***Edit, or you could put on thinner nuts, cut/grind off the excess stud material and then Loctite the new nuts.***

Just picked up some loctite. When I get out of work I'm gonna see how hard the studs are to back out. If they don't come out fairly easy I am going to use thinner nuts and trim the rest down as suggested. Thanks again for the help guys, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Someone chime in if I'm wrong but the "6 bolt" 002 is the older one and weaker right? so on that note keep your eyes open for a "newer" 002 with just the 2 bolt side cover like your wish pic

That is also what I gathered from the Transmission sticky. It just happened to be the right price with a warranty, and the warranty does not start until the car is on the road. I figured it would be better than the stock bug trans I knew nothing about. Hopefully it will work for the few hundred miles I plan on driving it per year.

you have a 1968 only trans. you will have to make it work or get a 69 and later trans with teh 2 bolt side covers.

the good thing is that 1968 trans are always good cores. the ring and pinions are always good in them unlike the 69 and later 002 trannys. seems you have about a 60-40 chance of being good

Ok so I picked up 12 M8 jam nuts to fix the clearance issue, and it worked.......for the outside. Now I am rubbing on the inner side near the seal and still can't get the c clip thing on the shaft coming out of the trans. Has anyone ever used this type of trans with 930 flanges? Obviously this clip is a must, but what happens if you don't use it????? THIS SUCKS!!!

Is the flange hitting those "nubs" between the bolts. Maybe a little "love" with a die grinder will work if your close. It would probably void your warranty and weaken the side cover, but sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures.

I'm fully prepared to get flamed on this suggestion..just throwing it out there. :P

If you look at this picture it is the area around the splined shaft. The innermost part is hitting the base of the flange. Here is the pic. On this link it shows to be part #61 I believe, or at least one of the part #'s in the low 60's.

There is like a spring washer inside behind the seal that has to be compressed to get the snap ring on.
You have to use some type of tool to compress that ring.

Once again Russ you are the man!!! Is all this literature available somewhere on the site or is that from your personal stash? Either ways thanks. I'm going to give it another go tomorrow after work, we'll see what happens.

Most of it is from my private stash of manuals. I have most of them scanned.
And available on DVD.
When someone has a question, I pull the page out of the scanned image, and post it to my web site http://classicvw.org/gallery2 and then post it as a link.

Did you put the spacer in before you installed the drive flanges? The flanges may hit or rub if these are not installed...

I'm gonna try to bring this one back from the dead...

I have the "later" 002 which has two screws holding the sideplate on. They are phillips head bolts. I'm trying to put 930 drive flanges on it and the only spot where the clip will fit in makes the drive flange bind up on those two bolts on the side. Changing the bolts won't help me any as they are pretty small headed already. Has anybody had this problem before?

Would I be okay to grind that phillips head down, or better to machine a little off the back side of the drive flange to clear?
