Just got my new heads on and I have a question on which gasket to use. I have a 40 horse with 113-101-371C heads. My intake is 113-129-701D. My old heads were same # as my new but with the letter A. There are two size gaskets that came in my kit. The larger of the two still has some wiggle room. My old head used the smaller gasket and it fits in tight. Is there a third size out there or is this wiggle room ok? Here are a couple pics...

new head with gasket, does not fit tight...

and finally the two different gaskets...

Thanks for the help..

There are 3 sizes.

36hp
40hp
1965 40hp

I think you have 65 heads?

I think 65 were just square boss?? Mine are round boss. So I'm guessing I can't use that gasket then?

I thought 36HP and early 40HP were both the same, at 32mm??

I've taken these comparison photos of early and late (32mm and 34mm) 40HP heads and gaskets. (Then there was that adapter "compensator sealing ring" shown in the Bentley - I bought a pair once, eons ago, but you won't find then for sale at all now. )

I've seen the 32mm heads reworked to 34mm before, by the way.

Should I try something like this? http://www.airheadparts.com/viewDetail.asp?strMasterCat=&idproduct=7868

Those are 38mm, too big for 40HP.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to say, that photo of yours with the copper seal slightly loose in the intake port, does not look too bad. Certainly looks much better than the "32 in a 34" photo I posted above.

Ok, I just measured both gaskets and looks like I have a 32 and a 33.

I found some gaskets in the classifieds, maybe I'll go that route. Thanks for the help, Chris

Those silver colored 34mm ones I got, are for some strange reason included in the 1300-1600 Elring brand engine gasket sets. Actually, if you don't need the paper cylinder base gaskets(most people just use sealant there these days) and stale-air clyinder sealing rings, and had 34mm-port heads, you could probably make do with just that later Elring gasket set. (assuming those 34s are still in there, I've not got one in a couple of years)

just got my gaskets in today too... and having the same problem. I ordered them from WW based on my year of car and 1300 engine size. And they seem to be a bit too small. What to do???

How small is too small? A millimeter or two?
I just reinstalled my intake on '65 square-boss heads and the gaskets are a tiny bit loose, but it's buttoned up and runs fine.

yeah... probably 2mm. a little wiggle room in there.

&Dan Fri Mar 19, 2010 6:30 pm

That's pretty much the wiggle room I had. I think you'd know right off the bat if there was a problem with sealing.

I found some NOS ones in the classifieds. I didn't want to go through the trouble of having to take it apart again. I'm glad your's is running fine despite the "wiggle room". If these are to small, it's going in anyway! Here's the link to the gaskets anyhoo.. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=620850

Yeah, so far, so good. The sealing surface on the manifold is actually pretty generous and once the gaskets are compressed they do grow a bit.
Naturally I'll be whistling a different tune [and so will the motor] if I'm wrong.

Hope those heads are working out OK. I did end up springing for a set.

They're on there, just waiting for the gaskets. I take it you're happy with your's?

They're on their way. I'm running the old ones until they give out, which may take a while, I hope!

I have the correct 34mm gaskets and started to assemble the motor today. I thought I'd adjust the valves with it still on the stand. I adjusted #1 exhaust and when I went to do the intake I could not get the feeler gauge in. I even took the screw all the way out and still could not get the gauge in between the rocker and the spring. I moved on to #2 just to see and I could adjust the intake this time but not the exhaust. WTF? When I took the old heads off I made sure I put the push rods back the same way. I'm at a loss here...

&Dan Sun Apr 04, 2010 6:43 pm

Does it look like you need new/different pushrods?

shano63 Sun Apr 04, 2010 7:02 pm

Would make sense but these are round boss heads just like my old ones. Is the "A" head (old ones) that much different than the "C" head??

Can't ever be easy, can it?
