Yep - its optional - i couldn't find one yet on the 51 but it works ok, just a bit rattly though when selecting.
As a temp fix - I think (this is long stored info and may be wrong) that the centre of a 3 1/2 inch Angle grinder cutting disk is the same diameter as an original tube and if you remove the centre steel section by destroying an old disk - it could be tacked carefully in place as a temporary measure at the end of the Top hat to act as something to keep the rod from wobbling if gear selection is a problem - no warranty with that temp fix mind :D . I did it on my 52 when i had problems i was trying to diagnose but turned out that the front shift rod was bent.

But I think it has to be flexible to amortize rod. Ben can make it easily and fast .

If you can make some, you could sell a bunch of them immediately to early bus owners.
My understanding is that it is "spring steel" though so that would be an important feature. |

Oh Yeh - i would take 2- I'm sure they are spring steel too.
The 3/4 inch disk will only help fix the loose issue if selection problems were an issue but create more noise from the rod- just a rough bodge quick step fix if its wobbling about. To be honest its more likely to be everything else as i would guess alot of these are missing/ broken or part rusted away now. |

| when i could not find any of these for 2 of my buses,i went with the later 60's plastic style. it is a little tricky and you need to figure out the "throw" of the rod and place the bushing on each end of the shift tube so that it rides in the tophat holes just enough that it wont slip out and jam. of course this entails drilling holes in the shift tube for the bushing to stay in place.I have been running this method on my 53 for 10 years without a bit of trouble. |

| I assume there is supposed to be one at the other end of the shift rod too? |

| i think the parts books note for just one bushing,up front. i have never seen any evidence of one in the rear in my poking around buses. at the time i did my plastic mod, i just assumed front and rear bushings so i did both ends. |

| My parts book just shows one but I always thought there was 2 too... maybe because of the later design of 2. |

my 53 single cab had two. the one in the front was worn out.
the rear one is rusty but still strong. i think it should only have one and you are welcome to it. if you still need one. just pm me your address in germany. |

Hi Ben,
can´t you take one of a baywindow Bus and modify that?
But forget the Repros, that´s chinese shit.
It should be super-easy to make one out of a bit of flat steel by bending it around a tube and before you can spot weld three pieces of spring steel fastening ropes to it with a resistance spot welder. I mean the sheet steel material which is used to seal and fasten big crates for transport.
Use common sense. It can´t be really difficult to manufacture such a part.
Just made a sketch ...
Did I really read 55 Bucks in the classifieds for this piece? Lunatics around ... HELP *röchel* Einige hier scheinen wirklich mit dem Klammerbeutel gepudert zu sein.
Regards,
Jurgen |
