Why all the Hate for VWoA? I know they are redoing a lot of their old adverts from back in the day. Some ok but not really in the "spirit" of the old days. I'm still learning about the ACVW scene, and there seems to be a lot of beef with VWoA.

Vanhag Mon Mar 15, 2010 9:47 pm

Because for years now VWoA has crapped on the ACVW community. They have sent lawyers after hundreds of enthusiasts and businesses. VWoA has repeatedly made it clear to the ACVW community that we don't matter in their eyes. No other car company in the world has shunned their early years more than VWoA. You think Ford would ever act that way about the old mustang? Or Chevy the Bel Air?

VWoA has done a lot to disrupt the ACVW lifestyle and community. You know what happens when you take your old bug into a VW dealership? They laugh at you and ignore you.

The message we have gotten is that VWoA would be a lot happier if we didn't exist and they're doing everything in their power to make that happen. They've done it so much that we've become embittered. It's hard when your parents constantly belittle you and put you down. Well now the feeling is mutual. We don't need VWoA and we'd be happier if they weren't around.

The only reason old dubs are in their add is so they can gain sales based on the wonderful work and reputation of those old bugs and busses by us, the people that have them as a hobby. The company that hinders our hobby is VW. You would expect that they would be of help but they hurt us. For instance the guy that did the restorations for Max couldn't get some parts such as VW hubcaps. Because you can't get them from VW and VW won't allow aftermarket suppliers to make hubcaps with the VW emblem. So take your bug into a dealership for parts or work and they will send you to some little VW shop down the street. But you can't find that little shop because VW won't let them use VW in their name. Try to find one in the Yellow Pages.

Agree. The quality is not there either. I owned an 89 GLI and ended up not liking it at all. Constant battle with stuff that is just wrong..not because of age. Just because of what it is. At least with my old vws I know the issues they have are simply from being around 50 years old.

my59 Tue Mar 16, 2010 8:20 am

My wife has a '01 NB.

Anytime I am in the service department at a dealership (which I avoid) I always start asking the parts department for things like an oil change kit for a 36hp. I smile when the guy says "Oh, we do not have any in stock, but I can get it for you"

Then I ask for wiper blades, or fuel line, or brake shoes.....little things.
I keep smiling when he is out of them as well and tell him, yeah, I can order it and have it shipped right to my door.

Meanwhile I can get just about everything I'd ever need for my 27 year old Benz from the Benz dealer if I wanted to pay their prices.

Very well said.

I hate that new "Punch Dub" commercial. Who the hell ever played the "Punch Buggy" game based off any of VW's water cooled crap? No one that I know of, lol.

I completely agree. Nicely done.

x2 I hate the "punch dub" commercial

VWOA wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all of the old bugs and bus's

So true. That's the only substantial leg they have to stand on. A lady friend was really impressed with my bug and how dependable and nice it was. So she thought VW was the ticket and got a Pissat. After a long time, many heartaches and much money I felt a bit guilty and talked here into dumping it. She now loves her Toyota.

I work in the parts department at a VW dealer, and we get a few ACVWs in here from time to time. I think there's only one or two techs that work on them (of almost 20 techs here, lol) but the service department can help them out.

I know it's hard to find parts...believe me, almost everything on ETKA is NLA for these cars; but we have accounts with a few ACVW specialty shops in the area. If we can't get something from VW we send our driver to get the required parts from down the street (instead of turning away the customer) or order it from an outside source.

But I personally hate the fact that VW has not allowed repair shops to spell "Volkswagen" (they have to spell it like "Volkswagon") and that they do not offer VW emblem patches, stickers, etc to be made other than by them. Yet they do not make them...not fair IMO.

All these threads about VWOA hate rub me the wrong way. If you don’t like the support you’re getting, hit the bricks.

The_whingnut Tue Mar 16, 2010 7:27 pm

i didn't start this thread to bash anyone i just wanted to know why VWoA is not liked by the ACVW community. I know there are exceptions to the no ACVW mentality from the dealers and i know some will treat you like sh*t. but i have never seen or heard of a car company bashing their own product or ppl who still buy their stuff decades after it left the factory. Hell a GM dealer sent me an orginal owner's manual for my 1975 Ponitac Grand AM just because it was cool to them someone wanted one of their old cars i just sent them an envelop and stamps.

I've heard of things like that happening with other brands as well. I met a guy a few years back who was a die-hard Dodge fan. He'd been buying NEW Dodge vehicles from them since he was in his mid-20s, and he was roughly 48 when I met him. Anyway, the Chrysler Corp knew about him and always gave him a discount whenever he needed parts and accessories from his local dealer.

When I met him he had a brand new Ram 1500 with the Hemi engine (just introduced at that time) and he had just bought his wife a new Chrsyler 300 with the Hemi engine as well. Dodge sent him two Superchips (one for each vehicle), for free! Enclosed was a letter saying they appreciated his ongoing business through all the years, and a coupon for the service department to install the chips at a discounted labor rate.

If VW did things like that for their long-time customers and fans, that'd be awesome.

No, she's had it a while and loves it and the dealerships arn't squeezing all the nickels out of her like VW did. It's a Scion or whatever they call them.
BTW it's good to hear about ANSAracingb and his dealer. They might be the lone straingers.
