Does anyone know if they had column mounted ignition switches in 64 ? I dont see a hole for mine in the dash or signs of one being filled in.

I noticed your car is on the cover of the new Karmann Ghia Parts and Resto catalog! Sweet Ghia!

The bra is there for a reason...to cover the damaged nose.
I did have a straight nose once: http://s30.photobucket.com/albums/c312/BanzaiJim/1964%20Karmann%20Ghia/

Just gotta make room in the garage to tear down the Ghia so I can get bodywork/paint redone and get interior redone.

Very nice! I also have a '64 coupe (can't remember the ch# and car is stored far away) but it has the "early 1964"-style front blinkers like yours. Mine is nowhere near as nice as yours, but originally came from AZ so it's reasonably solid.

You have '67-69 rear bumpers with the twin backup lights. Good safety upgrade if they're connected! Having nice bumpers is certainly a bonus.

Before you drive even down the block, cover up those round holes in the engine rear "breast plate". Holes like that let in lots of heat from the exhaust system. That hot air gets sucked into the engine fan ad blown down over the cylinders. You want only cool outside air coming into the engine compartment. All you need to do is to cut out some thin sheetmetal slightly larger than the holes, pop-rivet into place (3 rivets are rnough), then spray paint the tin semi-gloss black.

Any idea of your engine size and spec's? What size Webers are those? Is the car not too loud with that stinger?

I have been going through all of my parts that came with the car and I have found 3 different styles of turn signals the ones on my car are a matching pair but they are in horrible shape (electrical wise) i have a same style but its larger diameter, and i have one that looks to sit on a point of a fender so I am guessing that's type 3.

as far as lenses I have one glass lens and chrome ring, and one amber plastic lens that has two screw holes ( it seems too narrow for the bases on my car)

Its a 1914cc engine all new, 110 cam, 044 heads, aluminum case, full flowed to just a oil filter right now oil cooler is coming soon. dual 40 webbers (brand new from red line) thats all i remeber off the top of my head I think it was balanced too.

The backup lights are not hooked up and there is no switch in the nosecone even though it is a larger 12v bell housing. So they are just for looks right now.

I already ordered a Blank tin piece with no holes in it to fix that issue of the heat . I happen to work for a vw parts store so its cheap to just buy things (well if i dont mind it to not be OE).

As far as the stinger tip its long gone, I put on a magnaflow that was bought from A1 a few Vw classics ago.

I know a guy that can build a nice stock looking tach to fit right where your clock goes...

Here is the ignition hole in my "64. I don't know if they came stock with a column ignition.

Here are my front turn signals...I think they are stock but these people on here would know better than I would.

I just got my ghia last week as well. I spoke to the guy who sold you your ghia (via text) and I couldn't tell what the color was so he posted better pics of the shade...it really is a pretty car. Looks like it's in good shape like the one I ended up with...I am sorry you are having so many problems so soon. Atleast you have a little experience with owning a VW already. I hope you have worked out all the major issues and are enjoying your ghia as much as we are :D
..atleast you know all the cosmetic issues are pretty much taken care of

GhiaFreude's car has the "later half" 1964 front blinkers. Yes, they were also used on type 3 from ~'66 thru '69, and on Ghias thru '69 as well.

Fried, it's surprising that your 12V trans does not have the nosecone with a place for the reverse switch. Still, you can easily hook them up if you use a factory switch from a 1st generation Type 2. It's round and connects right at the speedo cable inlet. 2 wires. It works by turning on when the vehicle moves backward about a foot, since the speedo cable rotates "backwards". I have one of these on my Ghia cabrio with its stock "40hp" tranny. It works reliably but then only turns off when the car moves about a foot forward!

Your engine sounds like it'll be plenty powerful for easy cruising. Wishing you lots of fun with the car!

good to know these things, I have gotten a lot of the issues or projects done on it that i am looking to for a while for now its driving it in this nice weather im sure the bus doesn't like just sitting but you know how it is to have a new vw.

So the list of things I have done.

-Magnaflow muffler
-Cleaned up wiring
-re installed original turn signal switch (nothing was wrong with it)
-Put on incorrect but amber turn lenses
-correct wattage (now visible) tail light bulbs
-Aligned passenger door
-new universal ignition switch
- New (orig vw) head light switch
- new 6x9 speakers
-Overhauled the brakes including changing them to dual circuit
-front engine tin piece with no holes in it .
-washers and new bolts on bumpers, repainted the brackets.
-reinstalled breather box for oil filler.
-In stalled a horn (searching for the duals, relay and boot)
-correctly positioned the steering wheel

For me that was all easy things to have done on the car.
