Hey guys. Im really considering rebuilding my starter as I think it might have given up the ghost. It will work but only when some one turns the key and I hit it with a hammer which is annoying. I was thinking about taking it apart to see whats up. Any ideas?

I've had some success removing the end cap, cleaning and replacing the bushing. If the bushing is worn you could replace it as well. Either way, you must pull it out to work on it and replace it to test it. Unless you have a spare transaxle laying around. Good luck! Foss. N---.

what a pain in the ass!
Disassembled last night and took 3 hours to break it down. It spun freely and all assemblies worked well!? Im thinking its the solenoid which I tried to take apart but decided not too as I tried to pry the end cap off and saw wires then said nope, and put it back together. The brushes on it were way within tolerance and have a good bit of life left on them.

After I disassembled it, I cleaned it up then lubed it up really well. There a good bit of grease in there now on all the bearing surfaces. I think the solenoid might have been getting jammed up. I also lubed the solenoid armature as well. It was an absolute pain to get everything back together and was nothing short of a jig saw puzzle.

Going to install and test it out tonight

Finger crossed.

Most "starter" problems are not the starter motor themselves but the solenoid.

Do a search there are plenty of posts on the topic on how to diagnose starter versus solenoid problems.

Im going to give it a try, its an automatic starter so we shall see.
