I am looking at purchasing 1954 VW Beetle, but need help to verify the VIN numbers. BODY Number is 463 456 and CHASSIS is -1-0721944. Do they match?

Thank you

From

463456 is September, 1953 while -1-0721944 is September, 1954

In your photo, the VIN tag in the front, 1-0529951, does not match the pan but is correct for that body #.

Sounds like a '53 body on a '54 pan.

I looked at the photos on that site and the engine has a lot of incorrect parts for 1954. I would suspect it is a later engine.

Thank you for the help, they are asking 14K. Is this a fair price?

I've never seen that ridge type look around the chassis VIN stamping. My 49 has a raised area that has the stamp. Could that be a replaced VIN?

the vin has come off and replaced with screws, usually they are blind rivits on there.

i am a big fan of matching body and pan myself and would pass on pretty much any car that did not match.

No, I'm talking about the Chassis number in this picture:

Could just be the angle of the picture, but I've never seen the "ridge" around the number before.

It almost looks like the original number area was cut out and a piece (with a slightly larger border around it) was welded to the inside bottom of the chassis tunnel so the number shows through the hole.

Here are a couple of "raised" number areas as an example:

I have passed on this 54, still looking for 55 Ragtop or sedan.
