I got my birth certificate for my aussie notch
it lists two M codes
M108 and M407
M108 says Custom Model I am assuming this is the aussie "Deluxe" version that my car is
Its listed here on samba as "M108 is custom model" but does not list chassis 316 for RHD and australia as orgin.
M407 is not listed here on samba and it says unknown on the birth certificate
anyone have any thoughts what M407 would be? |

Would be good to see what list that VW themselves are refering to as these oddball M codes come up every now and then.
We are refering to known published lists here on the Samba but perhaps there is another list or two still within the walls of VW? |

Doubt it. the 316 model number designation says RHD 1500N
My car is a deluxe which is a Aussie option car
its a N base model with side trim, chrome vent windows, chrome light housing without the "S" stamp. has N interior which has bug rear ash tray along with arm rest.
the car is original paint and interior so none of has been messed with.
Another wacky thing about my car is its a 65 that was assembled in 66 sold in 67 that's why it is Savannah beige with red interior. It was built in the time frame that aussie production did there own thing before VW germany shut them down. that is probably why the certificate did not have the color information and the certificate says "color not mentioned" in the color section of the certificate.
so the M407 could be something about that maybe??? |

Somebody, somewhere has this info. I'm willing to bet that, since the Krauts don't have that M code on file, that it's an M code that was for Australia only- some sort of regional/ provincial/ state special equipment, or something.
Someone has to have an Australian- issued parts book. |

| I have an Australian parts book, the m code padge is dated 11/65 and does not list either of those m-codes. It actully only list 24 m-codes where as my other parts book with updates to 68' list's 64 m-codes and still does'nt list the two you are after. |

Check out the Samba thread above...
M407="Klappsitze im fahrgastraum"...translates to: Folding Seats In the Passenger Compartment.
If that's true, seems that cars from other parts of the world would have it too...?? |

It couldn't be arm rest in the back seat? That is standard 'S' fitment isn't it?
My seats are normal 'S', regular front and regular rear with the arm rest in the middle. |

Strike that one then...
I wonder what it could be? Even VW don't know. Perhaps it was a Friday afternoon car and they all knocked off at 4:07... |

Yes, but those are Type 2 M-codes. My understanding has always been that the same M-code does not mean the same thing for all Types. Correct or no? |

yeah there is a lot of differences, if you go look at them they are definitely not the same! |

I guess I never really gave enough of a damn about any other Type to be curious enough to do any actual research. |
