Just bought this for my wife - the end result will be a Max, but wont be repainted for a year or so. Getting Empi 5 spokes, adjustable beam, doing mild upgrade on the 1600 (dual kads, etc), Late geared tranny, and some other odds and ends. Bringing it home next week and will start work in a few weeks - will be on the road as her summer "driver" by mid-late April.

Here's the deal - we have more cars that we need, but we don't plan on ever selling any. She has a buggy, I drive my 65 and I am wrapping up a VW woodie. The weather is always to iffy for her to drive the buggy as much as she'd like, so she wanted a daily driver. She loves "Max" on the VW commercials and she was planning to buy a black early bug that was 100% done. But what fun is that? We had looked at a couple solid but rough cars and we had seen this one a few times. Hated to do a repaint on a finished car, but when I crunched the numbers, it made more sense financially to get the car that is almost done than to start with a shell.

I got it from a buddy that has about 20 VWs and he does the restos himself. His cars are solid drivers - not show quality paint, but all rust is cut out and replaced, engines are always stockers, but are reliably rebuilt and he doesnt use junk rubbers or chrome. He gave us a very good price on it, particularly for this part of the world. And don't ask how much, but it was a very fair price.

Anyway - getting with Art at ACE on mild upgrade package for the engine and tranny. Will have some odds and ends to do and will get wheels and tires for it. I should be able to do the work over a couple weeks and she can drive till the snow flies. Then over the winter, adjustable beam and, unless she changes her mind, will paint it black. But the color is growing on us.

Just got her home - was hooking up the tow bar where we got the car when my wife snapped the pic. Now she is here in my nice warm garage waiting for me to get to work.

In many ways its much better than I thought and the color is really growing on me. Interior is really nicely done with mohair headliner. Body is excellent and the paint job is nice. Have a set of Empi style 5 spokes ordered and 205/65-15s and 185/60-15s on the way. Beside details that I need to take care of, Art at ACE is working on the engine/tranny upgrade kit and I should have those in a few weeks.

Doing my first adjustable beam with some help from a good friend. Will give me a chance to rebuild the entire front end as well. Only going to drop about an inch or so, and with the shorter front tires, it should work well as a driver. (well maybe - just maybe might have to reindex the rear springs a little when I pull the transaxle and engine...)

I have to run through the entire harness and connections though - half the stuff doesnt work, but that stuff is usually pretty easy for me. My wife can't wait until she can get her on the road. Life is good.

I like the color and the paint looks good... Roll it as it sits 8)

LOL - Nah - I hate bias ply tires - and I have a stock 65 as my driver, so this one needs to be a little different. But besides the beam, nothing is getting cut on this car. And my wife has a bit of a lead foot, so we need to beef up the engine a little.

Well.....Art us putting together a "mild" upgrade for this (ported heads, dual kads, header, etc) and I suspect that it will be quick enough to get her into trouble LOL.

And yeah - we will probably get to some shows with her. But as mentioned earlier, this will be her primary driver from later in April till November. We build em to drive em.

EMPIImp69 Tue Mar 23, 2010 5:53 pm

That's nice, you think you will make it to the Campbelltown show in April?

andk5591 Tue Mar 23, 2010 5:57 pm

Planning to go to Campbelltown - I am doubting that I will be ready with this one, or at least have enough "shakedown" time, but I'll at least bring my red 65.

Good last couple days - redid the wiring somewhat - pulled the fuse box, cleaned it and just started sorting through and fixing/replacing. Everything works except the horn, and I just started on that. Wife is redoing the original headlisght assy - need repainted and I have new rings coming from WW. Next is pull the wiper assy and see what I have and convert it to 2 speed - hope i have enough parts in my stash...

Herbie3Rivers Sat Mar 27, 2010 11:41 am

Nice. Man you'll have to bring one of your rides into Pittsburgh for one of the shows!

wash11 Sun Mar 28, 2010 5:37 am

I'm diggin' the color.

andk5591 Sun Mar 28, 2010 7:03 am

Ya know - We both hated the color when we first saw that car - didn't matter since we were planning to repaint - but the longer we have it - the more we like it - Its her car, so the final decision is hers, but now she is saying - maybe we'll wait a couple years before we do anything with the color - I am really hoping that she decides to leac it alone and its starting to look like that 8)
