There will always be other "competing" sites out there. The fact is, even when the malcontents get their panties in a wad and stomp away fuming that they will create a "bigger and better site/club/gang.", it always turns into what they were trying to get away from. It's happened near me and honestly, it made everyone involved happier and the club stronger for it.
I have to credit The Samba for my rekindled interested in my ACVW (only one at that time). My interest in my '73 Super had cooled quite a bit over the last decade (not enough to sell it but enough that I hadn't put money aside to continue the restoration and I hadn't been driving it). Since signing up here I have aquired 5 more Beetles (3 for parts), 2 412's (1 for parts) a Doka and a van for parts, not to mention a large assortment of parts and other things. I also have become an active member of my local VW Club and have gotten to know a bunch of new people who are fantastic. I also support STF a bit and have signed up for SuperBeetlesOnly! who are not there to compete, they are just a bunch of people who have an interest in Supers specifically. Many are contributing members here as well.
I think people who defect and start their own sites only expand the community. They do come back here and other places they have left even if it isn't their main focus anymore. |
