Very nice! Were you able to secure a title when you bought it or did you have to get a new one?

rkeller Tue Mar 16, 2010 2:52 pm

It belonged to the property owners mother who had passed away. Somewhere the title and the engine ended up missing. We went with the lady's son to the DMV but ended up having to pay for a bonded title anyway.

I see. I am just curious because my car didn't have a title either. However I still have contact info for the PO, and he gave me some info on the PO before him, so I'm hoping to track down the last people that drove it and see what I can do...

Anthracite!

rkeller Wed Mar 17, 2010 3:46 am

The engine is a 1776 :D , and yes it is anthracite, available from 1961 - 63, named after a dense high carbon coal. An old wood carver in Wake Forest showed me a picture of his early 60's Bug he said he special ordered in anthracite. I had never seen a VW this color before. Now I have seen a few on the Samba. We had to put a dulling agent in the paint so it would look more like the original and not be too shiny. I'm sorry I would be embarrassed to say how much I spent. You would be much better off buying one already done... I spent way too much having an original rag top grafted in. If it wasn't for that, the restoration, not counting labor would have been around 10K.
