| Thanks for that tip. Especially for posting the price. My insurance (like everyone else's I'm sure) went out of their way to tell me they would not pay "collector" price for the car and that they would only pay blue book, $2000-$6000 for a '56 sedan. |

| Is that insurance for an antique or a daily driver? I have mine insured as a daily driver and it is somewhat more expensive. |

| capeoddboy, I think we are talking about an insurance supplement that is in addition to your normal insurance. And I don't know about your daily driver but 20K would cover my daily driver twice :) |

| Oh I am not supposed to put more than 2500 miles on it a year. But not sure who is gonna ever look, because I am getting antique plates for the car also. So that means NO yearly inspections. |

In Mass you can only drive on weekends and to a show or cruise night with an antique plate. I use mine every day that I drive when there is no snow on the ground. I had it appraised and my insurance company insures it at that value. I guess it is better than book value.
If your gonna play, you have to pay! Now if I can just finish putting my new engine together........... |

Just wanted to tell my Hagerty story
about 5 yrs ago I was hit on the passenger side of my 65.
worked a number on that door
I called Hagerty and they told me to take it to my shop of choice. Once there I had a hard time finding a solid rust free door. Hagerty paid for 3 different doors, and the labor to have them stripped until we found a solid donor. total repairs with paint and 3 doors added up to a little under 6K. Hagerty didnt bat an eye they paid the bill and the change orders along the way. Fast forward six months after I got my car back I received a check in the mail for 200 from Hagerty they had sued the lady that hit me (she was found to be at fault) and sent me my deductible back. well thats my story about Hagerty, they are great to work with! |

| I see alot of cars here with classic an antique plates being driven daily. Who is gonna police it?? State troopers dont care. They have enough of a hard time with the crack heads an the thieves to worry about some old bug being driven two or three times a week. |

WOW!!!! Now thats a good insurance company. When I took my car to the A-Holes to fix the turnsignals an they kept my car for thirty two days.....never even looked at the problem. THEN smashed the rear fender in an then said it was like that when I brought it in
My wonderful Progressive didnt do a thing!!!! So I gotta get a new fender. Wish I were with Hagerty THEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| I went the Haggerty route as well. They ask you to verify that all household drivers have their own car with insurance (talk about promoting over-consumption of automobiles  ), and they have general restrictions on useage of the car. Trips to car events, mechanical testing and pleasure drives are their general categories for use. They don't want you running errands, using it as a backup car when another one is in the shop or daily use to work. When you combine those great rates with no more state licensing fees for collector cars (WA state), it's a real boost for the aircooled VW economy. |

Someone else to consider is Chubb Collector Car Insurance.
https://www.chubb.com/chubbcollectorcar/index.htm
They are a direct underwriter as opposed to a broker. Up until a couple years ago Chubb was the sole underwriter for Grundy. Grundy had a falling out so Chubb decided to start writing policies on their own. They have been in the insurance business for over 100 years and are a top insurer of high dollar art collections, jewelry, historic homes, classic cars, yachts and airplanes. So they are not a stranger to high value policies. Through Grundy they have been insuring classic cars for decades so they have established relationships with restorers across the country.
Besides having Chub insurance on three collector cars we also have a policy on our home. A few years ago I had the unfortunate opportunity to put them to task. We had some major flooding and needed help quick. Literally within hours of or initial call to Chubb we had service on site, draining, drying and repairing the damage. I was amazed considering I know I wasn't the only one that experienced this kind of damage in Central Jersey. When I asked the flood repair service supervisor about how he got to us so quick he said it was because of Chubb. He said they are a premium client that doesn't dick around with payment or contest repair estimates that many other insurance companies routinely do. When he gets a call from a Chubb client, they [in this case us] get bumped to the top of the list. This made me feel pretty damn good and has made me a believer in the product and service Chubb provides. When they started to offer the collector cars ins I was first in line.
Their pricing is on par with folks like Grundy and Hagerty, but they don't have an mileage restrictions. They also don't multiply premiums if you have multiple cars. Check out their website above for some of their other features of standard coverages they provide.

I now have 4 cars with Grundy (the policy now refers to it as my "collection" ) and am very happy with them. No mileage restrictions. I also have a friend who has them and got hit in his '59, not his fault. Grundy has gone to bat for him, even badgering the responsible's party for payment and validating the value of the VW.
No mileage restrictions with Grundy either. I think my '57 is $140/yr for $15k coverage. |

JohnHenry,
Is your 57 registered as an antique or does it have regular plates?

regarding Grundy, I have 1956 CA Plates, used as Year of Manufacture (YOM) on my Oval... they didn't care.. and it is an AGREED value, not Stated Value, make sure you know the difference... with Agreed Value, you decide how much $$ you get if something happens.... not some insurance guy that says "your car isn't even in the Kelley Blue Book anymore, we are going to total it out and give you what WE think it's worth (probably 500 bucks..)
It's still best to shop around, to ll the major ones, and the new one (Chub) that I never heard of, but make 101% certain you know what you're getting, in the way of coverage. |

Year of manufacture plates (MA), but that has no effect on the insurance policy. I can't use the car as a daily driver with the Grundy agreement. |

| I was pulled over for running a plate frame on my car. The police made me take it off on the spot as it obscured part of the plate. Just my luck I guess. It was a VW/year plate frame that I had to remove. |
