I have had American Collectors Insurance for the past 10 years.

Nobody has beat their quote yet, and they are backed by USAA as well.

That's who I have. One thing I like about American Collectors (other than the lowest rate I found) is that they automatically increase your "agreed value" by 2% each quarter, taking into account appreciation of a collector vehicle. So on a $13,000 agreed value, in one year that automatically goes to $14,040 and your annual payment stays the same.

So what would be the general consensus as to who is the best insurance company to go with. Looks like Haggerty or American Collectors. I don't want to have a mileage restriction on the car even though I might not put 5,000 miles on it in a year, I would like to have room for a road trip to a show across country if I wanted.

Also roadside assistance is a great stipulation for me. I've had experiences with roadside assistance being good in the past but the last incident with roadside assistance coming home after being on the road for 15hrs in the bug was not a good one through Progressive.

I was quoted at American Collectors with a $6,000 value estimated 5,000miles a year with $0 deductible @ $403.95

I was quoted at Hagerty with the 150-mile roadside assistance plan (which covers all of my vehicles not just the bug) no estimated mileage a year with $0 deductible @ $286/year

It's hard to pick who's best. Service and price will vary between states and even within states. Best to compare for yourself based on your location. The fact that I've had a good experience with Chubb in Jersey doesn't mean you'll have the same experience in Chicago. It could be better, or it could be worse, same goes for all the major players. Look at what each one offers, and compare their prices. I'm paying about $275 a year [total] for a '69 sedan with 7k coverage, a '79 convertible with 15k coverage, and a '65 Chevy pick-up with 20k worth of coverage. My policy also has $0 deductible, roadside assistance, no mileage restriction, and coverage for car rental and lodging if I break down on the road. This is all with a 500k in liability coverage.

Just spend a hour or so and find the best coverage for the best price.

Hagerty also requires that the vehicle be stored in a lockable garage. I have 3 cars with them. No one has ever checked on mileage or garage. They also require that you submit information on another car that is your daily driver. Supped up cars are a no no. A picture is required of the insured car. I always take the picture with the car parked in front of a garage door. $275 per year for all 3 cars. No claims or problems so far.

You are taking a chance if you don't have a garage or are driving more than your annual allotment [if there is one]. Say your car get stolen from your home, if they find out you don't have a garage, you get bupkis. Same thing goes for a fender bender where the shop lists your current mileage. If the adjuster checks your policy and sees that you have driven farther than you were supposed to since you started the policy, he could legally bounce that too.

Actually they didn't ask for the mileage when I took out the insurance. i.e. no comparison issue. 2. Without a garage, you are self insured for theft. But, you still have all the legal road insurance that the state requires. That is my main concern. The '56 does reside in the 3 car garage most of the time.

Well I chose to submit the application for Hagerty. It seemed the most reasonable and easiest to deal with. The extra 150mile towing package for $85 seemed worth it to me to still bring the yearly total to a quarter of what I was going to pay with Progressive. The garage isn't a problem as I have a 3 car garage attached to the house. I highly doubt I put more than the allotted 5,000 miles a year on the car as I noted. The process at signing up seemed easy enough and there was nothing really that struck me the wrong way. I'm waiting now for them to accept my application, to submit photos and to submit the payment for the insurance.

One question on the photos. What kind of photos are they wanting? I have hundreds, of the inside and outside. I would suppose just basic photos that show the well being of the vehicle in its current state. How many photos do they want etc... I didn't read anything that said more about this other than that I just had to submit photos of the vehicle.

I would assume to wait and send the payment for the insurance after they send me the email back stating they accepted my application. Of which I could simply gather a few photos at that time as well. Am I too far off on this procedure? an answer from somebody who has already went through this...

I'm actually going to be getting Triple A also and canceling my roadside assistance on my primary vehicle through Progressive. The topic of them wanting the declaration page for my primary vehicle through Progressive seemed kind of weird to me, I guess It's sort of a reference to base that I legitimately want and can take care of insurance for a collector/vintage vehicle...

On the other hand Chubb of which I never heard of (interestingly reading the previous users statements of his great experience with it) just quoted me at $165 with Liability at 300k, and UM/IM at 300k

Hagerty just wants a 3/4 view of the car just to verify that its condition is appropriate to the insurance you are applying for and to confirm you actually have a car. I submitted one per car. No further photos were requested. The additional information required about your primary car is to confirm that you have a daily driver in addition to your collector car.

I have nothing but great things to say about Hagerty Classic Car Insurance. I recently took my wife's '64 21 Window Deluxe to have a stereo installed in it. During the install, the gentleman installing the front door speakers accidentally drilled through the nose skin above the passengers headlight. This was barely noticeable but we had a estimate done and Hagerty sent out an appraiser to inspect the damage. He recommended painting the entire nose after repair (blue only) and put in a supplement to paint the entire bus (blue only) if paint pattern did not match, due to the fact this is done in single stage paint. Long story short, Hagert painted the entire blue section of bus, no questions asked. i pay approximately $216 for $35k worth of agreed value. I wouldn't look anywhere else.IMO. :D

Chubb has been around for over 100 years and their primarily focus is business and high-end personal lines. They are not in the typical consumer business [ie: All State, Farmers, State Farm, Progressive, Geico etc.]. They are a direct insurer, they underwrite their own policies. As I mentioned before, they used to underwrite Hagerty. They had a falling out and now are writing their own collector car policies. They are big in insuring art collections, jewelry, mega yachts and other pricey goodies, collector cars were on the low end of the scale so that is why they partnered with Hagerty. When things started to sour with Hagerty, and because of the growth of their personal lines, they decided to start to write their own collector car policies.

Although they will insure all collector vehicles, their focus is still on the high end stuff. Big collections [like Jay Leno], and sponsoring events like Pebble Beach, Amelia Island etc.]. So they have the capability and experience to manage anything we can throw at them.

Their pricing is surprisingly affordable for what they provide, maybe a perk form dealing directly with an underwriter [no middleman].

Regardless, I'm sure whoever you choose, they will be more than able to take care of all your needs. I threw Chubb into the mix because of my personal experience with them, and from the research I've done, they are a solid player.

 HOLY CRAP  $403.95 a year for $6,000?

That doesn't seem right. I've got $13,000 worth of coverage for $152.00/year. That's coverage equal to all the others - roadside assistance, cost of extra parts...yada yada yada.

Something doesn't seem right.

I agree. I think I pay $140/yr with Grundy for my '57 valued at $15k. No mileage restrictions.

I had a similar experience with Hagerty. After a couple years of having a split insured with them they sent me a letter that they automatically increased the agreed upon value by $10K. After that they pretty much had me as a customer for life.

Yeaaa not sure what was going on there. Hagerty was around $200. Not sure if they take drivers age into consideration? I'm only 27 but I don't have anything on my driving record either. Not sure whats going on with AC.

I drive it around 2500 miles a year .If I was to do something like a Gene Berg Cruise I can call and inform Haggerty to add miles ( no cost) . I'm around $300 a year for the '57 and '61 Beetles.
