I bought a 56 a few years ago and have not done much with it. It suffers from a lot of rust, and needs way more work than I can allot time for now that my family life has become more complex so I am toying with the idea of parting it out. I have about 1 1/2 cars worth of "stuff" all in pretty rough condition and I am wondering where the best outlet would be to sell the parts. Can anyone tell me where they have had success? Ebay??? The for sale section of this forum? Maybe Ebay, and a link in the for sale forums? Thanks!
Also are there any specific parts that will fetch a premium? I have the rear "w" decklid, I hear these are desirable... The transmission also seems to be in good shape, what about the front beam? Thanks again!
 |

Ovals are getting harder and harder to find. Can you post pictures of your car? It might be better (or worse) than you think.
You might be surprised. You might find someone who would buy it as it is if they have the time/skill/$$ to restore it. |

In addition to all this stuff, I have two engines. One is a 1200 I think, and the other was a rebuilt 1600. The previous owner left the "new" motor outside and water got into the cylinders. The crankshaft has no/little endplay and rotates quite freely, but it needs cylinders/jugs and the heads need to be rebuilt. Anyway...

That thing is far from a basket case. Why not just post it in the classifieds here on The Samba?
You could sell your spare parts here too. Spend a little time browsing the classifieds for comparable parts and you will quickly get a good idea of what they are worth.
Good luck. |

| That looks like a typical NE VW. I have boxes of parts that look similar to yours up in my attic. The rear tailight assemblies are worth selling. Have you tried running an ad on your local Craigs list? There may be someone local looking for some small items. That body looks like alot of work. I dragged a 56 back to VT from Missouri and spent a lot of time and beer getting mine resto'd. It was a great learning experience but it would have been cheaper to buy a good one from out west or a more complete bug for more$ than I spent on what I dragged back :? You will Not however find a better group of people than here on the Samba to help you along. Cheers to that ! :D |

I'm playing the "pay it forward" game.
I have a 57 in a tad worse shape than yours is. I've no interest in it. I"ve had it for years and now I've got three other VW's that all need work and my yard is FULL! I'm going to focus on getting the engine back in the Super Vert and then pull in the two Ghias and make one complete convertible.
I took the easiest path with the 57 and decided to just give it away, it is being picked up on Tuesday. I placed an ad and pulled it after 23 replies came in almost instantly !
After the 69 Ghia sedan is stripped of what I need, I'll probably give that away as well, someone always needs something and with the economy like it is today, any help given is always appreciated.
I count my blessings that my wife and I still have a good job and steady income, I don't need to take the hard earned pennies from someone who really needs a given part but can't afford it.
I've given away clutches and other parts to various VW owners down on their luck. I have it, I don't need it, it's yours!
Who wants a GOOD deal on a 59 2 fold clip?? (this one I'm NOT giving away)
I feel that People are trying too hard to make money off of a hobby selling rusty crap. The greed I see in "VW World" sort of turns my stomach.
I hope the person who is getting my 57 can use it, distribute parts to buddies or do whatever he wants to with it. If he needs the cash, sell it, I don't really care. I talked to him, he seems like a decent egg and honest enough. On the down side, I may be getting taken, if so I can always hope that the balance of life will frown upon him.
Your car? You could sell it for a few hundred, you could invest a lot of time and effort and part it out, it will involve packing parts and carting them off to be shipped. In the end you will probably get more than selling it whole. Just don't go thinking you are sitting on a pot of gold here.
Good Luck
