How about nearside and offside?

I was even about to say Vdubtech had a good point, then busdaddy goes and gets between my foot and my mouth. once the engine is out of the car though, the flywheel becomes the back for no good reason, and its just how I have come to understand things.

Randy, do you know if that special CV grease scott sells is special to match the boots, or special as in it is simply proper CV grease?

Randy in Maine Fri Mar 19, 2010 6:19 am

I will defer to Scott, but I would think that is just appropriate CV joint grease. Lots of moly in it.

I think that's a bit over my head. May I email them to you to review and post if they're good enough?

My address is myawman@gmail.com

Sorry, I don't have access to Email today, if no one else has stepped up I'll give it a go tomorrow, tried loading them into the gallery?

Randy in Maine Sat Mar 20, 2010 12:04 pm

I have them and will load them up in my gallery here in a few minutes.

What we have here is a failure to 1) torque correctly and 2) failure to re-torque after a 100 miles or so.

My suggestion would be to see just how many of the torque spreaders you are missing and also how many of the funky serrated washers that are gone. Buy that CV bolt socket that I posted and spend a day repacking those that were open to the dirt and re-torque all of them.

I don't know if I would go back to the guy who put those on. He is not doing you any favors. When you do it yourself, at least you will know that they were done correctly.

An update:

To quote WC Fields: "I have taken the bull by the tail and looked it straight in the eye."

With considerable gratitude to Randy in Maine for the council and courage to take on this project (a first for this old, retired mortgage banker) I've been under the bus and taken inventory. Seems all that's missing is one joint screw. The other five are intact including the three torque spreaders. I've ordered all new joint screws and washers along with a triple square joint socket. All that's left is a torque wrench. In 5-7 days the love bus should once again be on the road.

Again, my thanks to all who joined in, 'specially Randy for simple and complete instructions. I owe you a few adult beverages.

Good for you Mike! It will be an adventure.

My father likes to say...."you will never learn how to do this any younger." :P

Roll'n roll'n roll'n, Rawhide...........

I have joined the rolls of rolling stock. Last try, give it another go, one more rotation, last time on my back with grease in my hair, don't quit, just once more, can't be that hard...........no, really. Where's the paper towels?

With thanks to Randy in Maine I am now re-supplied with wine and toilet paper. I am once again civilized. Can't express my joy in learning one more skill.

Many thanks to all here who participated. The next failed CV joint is mine!

Mike

Nice job Mike. A real feel of accomplishment.

fusername Tue Apr 06, 2010 6:40 am

congrats man! now remember to re-check the torque in ~100 miles. also keep in mind, once something like this has happened and the bolts have backed themselves out, it is common for them to NEVER lock in place again. wether this is because the threads get wallowed or teh hole in the cv, no one is sure, but it is a documented fact. which means check yours AGAIN from time to time, and carry spare bolts adn the socket in your car.

Unless you are in a foreign country where they drive on the wrong side of the road and have right hand drive vehicles. England comes to mind. :bay_red:

Mike Yawman Wed Apr 07, 2010 4:39 pm

Thank you, fusername. I ordered and installed all new bolts. I'll have a qualified mechanic re-torque the bolts all around in the next week.
