View original topic: Falling flat and popping through carb...

Okay its one thing after another. I did a full tuneup, timed it and whatnot. It runs like shit. The conditions are it was running perfect. Took it to the store and on the way home it started bucking and popping like it was starving for fuel. I checked the pump, accelerator pump and even pulled the carb to check all the jets were clear. Nothing. It will start and idle but falls on its face off idle and then picks up. Hold it steady at 2500 rpm and it will slowly die off and want to stall. Feathering the throttle does nothing to keep it alive. It will pop back through the carb sometimes but not always so I though it was ignition related. I checked the valves, swapped out my 009 for another I have and hooked up a different coil. Nothing. Wait a few moments and it will fire back up and idle. It will sometimes let you get up to a high rev but wont hold and dies back off. I guess I can pull my plugs next and check the gaps/condition and replace the fuel filter again in case it may be plugged all of a sudden. I replaced it at time of tuneup. Like I said though it was running perfect I mean perfect and the all of a sudden it started acting up. Overheating maybe? Im lost and frustrated so I thought I would ask the pros around here what they think.

did you check the float in the carb..sounds like the float bowl is running dry.

I was just going to add that to the post but you beat me to it.
I held the throttle open and let it pop hesitate and want go farther and farther down until it died even though I was holding the throttle open far enough to have it up in the 2k range. So I popped the top half off the carb right away and the bowl was low with fuel. The float was at full rest. If you stuck your finger in there with tip of finger on the bottom of the bowl it came up to about the first knuckle on the end of my finger. (Finger size may vary but you get the idea) What do you think about this yall?

How much fuel should the carb. bowl have in it at any given time? Should it be so low that the float is at full sag and not floating anymore?

Check the fuel pump and pressure. Sounds like it's supplying just enough fuel to idle, but not enough for higher RPM's.

Fuel line from tank to tunnel was pinched off letting just enough flow to run at idle but not at higher idle or running. As stated above. Once again a good point of checking the small things first. Singing like a sewing machine now.
