As my old stock horn didn't work,I wanted to have something louder.Bought a pair of horns and installed them. Used the wiring diagram from the Ghias with dual setup. Relay is wired this way;no.86&30 are jumped 12 volt from fuse box.No85 hooked to the horn wire,no87 out to the + side of horns. The ground wire from horns are hooked the the brown ground.

When I connect the black wire in the steering wheel to the contact screws the horns sound continually, with ignition off. With ignition switched on nothing!Reading 12volts at the black wire to contact screws, with key off!

The ground wires on steering coupler and front beam look good and seem to be intact. Know I've overlooked something :?:

Ghia horns are hooked up differently. Type 3s the positive is hot anytime the key is on and the ground is the interrupt. Look at the type 3 wiring in the technical section. Just put the horns in parallel and it's work fine.

one off google

a "hella" one off google

i could of swore that russ had another one but???

just have to find a Dual Horn switch or "Same"

Yes our Type 3s use the Ground

I can tell you I have a set of 2000's Land Rover Dual Horns
and they dont work when i Just sit there
and they only Really work
when im driving down the road

Not Enough Power...I Need A Relay

This the way I have the relay wired,I wired the grounds to the black wire(ground?) Going to check to see if black wire is attached to the bottom of the collum.

in the diagram you guys have for the ghia.. .the brown is your ground and the relay supplies power to the horns when the Horn button is pressed.

It looks like the Ghia is a positive switched, where as the type 3's are ground activated.

If you bought an aftermarket horn you have to make sure it doesnt ground itself throught the mounting bolt. if it does, you have to find a way to isolate it otherwise it will ground anytime you apply power.

Ok.... try this. Take the power off of 30... keep it only on 86. 85 will supply ground the coil in the relay when the horn is pressed. 30 needs to be connected to a good ground. When the horn is pressed it will close 30 to 87 and complete the ground in the circuit. Make sure that power is connected to the horns. and ground goes to 87. hope that helps

all grounds in are cars Should be BROWN

so im going to get a Relay tomorrow
and try hook it up for my Dual horns

Just need to figure where to hook the HOT up to

the wiring on a Ghia and a type 3 is So different for the horns

they both join the power at the power for the brake switches

but type 3 is within the connector for the switches
and the Ground is straight to the horn ring thru the column

the ghia goes from column to relay then to horns..

a little confusing....

if anyone has a diagram to hook up duals (without switch)
for a type 3
that would be great

where should the relay go?
where should i splice for the ground?

Russ Wolfe Wed Mar 17, 2010 9:31 pm

Wire it the same as the Ghia.
The horn wire does not come from the brake lights. It just comes out of the harness with the brake light wires.

Power from hot on the fuse box to #30 on the relay.
From #87 on the relay to the horn. Ground the other side of the horn.
power from the ign. side of the fuse box to the #85,
Connect #86 to the steering column, where the old brown wire was.

Here. Compliments of the off road guys.

so i should have the relay probably under the hood by the connector for the brake switches
HOT spliced into the O.G. Horn Wire
OR Should I Wire It DIRECTLY To The Fuse Box?
(any particular place that would be the best)

a wire going from relay back into the cab under the dash
and into the Brown wire to the column (directly, NOT Spliced)

and then the ground for the horns
(2 wire horns NOT grounded to the body)
To the body somewhere(probably to the mounting bolts)

sorry for MY confusion
I am a mechanic but Not an electrician

Russ Wolfe Wed Mar 17, 2010 10:17 pm

On the Ghia, the relay is close to the horn.
Use the existing ground wire going to the horn to connect to the steering wheel.
Run the hot wire from the fuse box to the relay.

sharkskinman Wed Mar 17, 2010 10:20 pm

Ah...ok
i'll just cut and tape off the O.G. HOT to the horn

and mount the relay in the driver fender where the wires meat for the dual horns

hope this helps more than just me

Always with some Great Info, Russ...

Hello all,thanks for the feedback,followed Russ' post;

"Power from hot on the fuse box to #30 on the relay.
From #87 on the relay to the horn. Ground the other side of the horn.
power from the ign. side of the fuse box to the #85,
Connect #86 to the steering column, where the old brown wire was."

Both horns work, just needed to change the wires to the proper terminals!

Regards,Bill :D
