I've got my 1600 running on a test stand and I'm about to mount it in my '71.
I use the Bug Me Video method of putting the engine on a little cart, dropping it off on a motorcycle jack, and lifting/tilting until it is in. In the past, I've removed the heat exchangers and muffler before attempting this. Has anyone done this with these on the engine? It sure would make life easier after the engine is in place. |

yes
it will go in with muffler and heat exchangers in
Just watch your rear apron so you dont scrap it or bend it on the muffler. |

It's funny, I've never managed to get an engine into a bug or a ghia with the heat exchangers on. I assume my angle of approach is wrong or something, they whack into the bulkhead before the studs get near the gearbox. I tend to fit the exhaust beforehand ( if it's a stock pea shooter) or afterwards ( if it's a header) and always heat exchangers afterward too. I know this isn't 'correct', just my way

I generally have it leaning back, as the problem for me is clearing the generator pulley if you try to go straight in
Once you engage bottom studs - not all in, but started, lift the rear and in itll pop.
If its leaning forward then you are right it is a pain.
In fact I should have mentioned, I like to pull gennie pulley off and cover it with a rag to keep it from scraping rear apron.
Alternatively, I have often pulled fan housing and installed the fan housing, and genie after engine is in.
It makes it easier to get to the rear nuts, check alignment and make sure throttle cable is easy to go in as you can slip it into the tube before engine is bolted up.
The fan hosuing on a ghia (unlike Bug and Bus) can be pulled and replaced with engine in car and decklid in place) |
