Did this start after you rebuilt the carb?

Could be an exhaust leak somewhere. Run the engine and hold a couple of rags over the tail pipes and try to plug off the exhaust. If the engine stalls, you have a tight exhaust. If it keeps running, you can hear the exhaust leaking PHSSST!.

Let me know what it is when you figure it out. I would love for mine to be able to do that! ROFLMAO

It only takes a small leak in the exhaust to cause to problem as you describe. Air enters the exaust through the leak on decelaration and adds oxygen to the unburned fuel and causes ignition.

Those doughnut gaskets can be a problem trying to get them to seal. Some fit better than others. Also the ends of the heat exchanger rust to a smaller diameter or rot where they exit the heat exchanger and leak. There is a machined part to repair the exchanger instead of replacing the whole thing. You cut off the end and hammer in the new piece.

They're still available. Part number VWC-113-255-107-X.

Check around for other sources.

Stock exhaust?

May be bad exhaust valves allowing the combusting fuel/air mixture in the cylinders to extend the burn to unburned fuel in the exhaust system.
