| I recently replaced the brushes on the generator of my '70 Squareback, but now when the car is idling, it makes a horrible screeching noise, seems to come from the gennie - any ideas what I should do? |

| Your generator has a mark on it that MUST meet up with the "dot" on the gen stap. If not the cooling air isnt going into the gen, but to the side of the hole.... Your gen may be overheating because of this. Another easy way to tell is your post's for the gen should be pointed toward the driver side of the vehicle. Hope this helps. |

Did you turn the armature and re-surface it when you put the new brushes in?
If not, could be that the brushes just need to seat in on the old commutator. |

Replace the bearings. Jim Adney has them in stock, and sells them cheaper than my local bearing house. |

| I got by for about two years by cleaning and regreasing the bearings. But they eventually totally gave up the ghost and I found replacements. |

| We replaced them on my son's car 2 years ago. Man, the old ones were so noisy that we thought a main bearing in the engine was bad. Took the belt off, and the noise went away. I knew right then what the problem was. Took us about an hour to replace them. Cleaned up the armature while we were in there as well. Pretty easy to do. I guess that's a plus for keeping the generator. |
