I know the OP started with a question ghia vs. 911, but what about ghia vs. 912. The 912 was a 4 cylinder as well and if not mistaken also used the 356 engine for a bit before the type 4 was used. Since the 912 is the REAL poor mans Porsche does the ghia compare?

For me a 69 ghia would be the best base car to start with. Add the following and have some real fun!!

HD rear torsions
944 rear trailing arms and disks
HD front and rear sway bars
Front lowered spindles with disks
5.5 inch fuchs or similar
2110 engine
5 speed trans or custom wide ratio 4 speed

About $20K for a "nice" driver if you build it yourself. All the fun and reliability but none of the Porsche prices!
