View original topic: What is the smart way to correct a backwards battery connect
Hi driver Fri Mar 19, 2010 12:03 pm

Hi- So ive been doing alot of reading about positive grounded systems like mine. seeing how some cars have used Red as a neg and black as positive, I think a previous owner went with color rather than following the wires and installed the Battery backwards.
I want to correct this and looking for the correct steps.
Drain Battery dead and recharge?
Disconnect Generator wires while hooking up battery correctly?
polarize generator after or before switching cables?
Any help would be appreciated
The car is 12 volt,
bare bones, no radio or aftermarket stuff, & points ignition
Thanks a ton

What? It's not positive ground.

If it is in fact pos ground {do not go by wire color} You will have to make sure the battery is COMPLETELY DEAD. Leave your headlights on until they no longer glow then test it with a voltmeter.
With Battery disconnected, polarize the gen..
Make sure the voltage regulator wiring is set correctly for a neg ground system
Charge battery the proper way then reconnect the battery.
Start it up.
Note: the starter does not care which way it is wired at the battery. It will always spin the correct direction.
