I just installed my 40hp motor recently and just started driving it a few days ago. When taking off from complete stops 95% of the time the car is completely normal. Every now and again when starting in first gear the car bogs down and just almost dies before finally picking up and slowly going.
I first thought that my clutch might be going out but wouldnt the engine rev really high before actually catching and going?! Thanks for time and any info you can give I would most appreciate. |

| only when cold or what? Is there something consistent when it happens. My 1200 is not happy until she warms up pretty well. |

I don't mean to be a wise ass, but are you sure you have it in first gear? Maybe something out of adjustment in the shifter or shifter coupler. If the clutch was slipping, the engine would rev and you'd be almost sitting still.
Check fuel accelerator pump diaphragm (they tend to get ate up by fuel with alcohol) and discharge nozel. With the engine off, look down the carb and pull the accelerator arm. You should see a steady stream of fuel spraying.
Intermediate speed circuit could be partially plugged.
Fuel filter clogged or installed backwards.
Float needs adjustment and/or needle & seat sticking.
Check that the vacuum advance diaphragm is working.
Coil could be starting to fail or has loose/dirty connections.
Are the points clean and correctly gaped?
Check plugs, plug wires and dizzy cap. Check timing.
Check for vacuum leaks in manifold and carb. |

| Thanks I will check all of those things this week. Just starting to drive a bug again for the first time in years, that would be kinda funny/lame if I was in third lol. Ill try and give it a 3rd gear start and see what happens. |

I bought a bug to make a rail out of. we rebuild the carb but could not figure otu how to get the diaphram (triangle one ) out - so i left that one. ir turns rough and when i tried to drive, no matter how high i reved - when the tranmission load was put on the motor - it just bogs out and does not want to move. i can barely get it back in garage.
New ot VW- so any help would be appreciated - ask what you can and i will answer as to what we have done or not done. |

If the car was setting a while:
How about flushing the tank and replacing soft fuel lines and rebuilding the carb. |
