View original topic: Jacked up my car today. Doh!

I put the rear of the car up on jack stands today. When I lowered it back to the ground the rear wheels were canted inward something fierce. My first reaction was, "what the hell did I do!" Since then they have slowly straighten out. This is my first bug and my first time raising it. Is this normal?

Uh oh, you killed it. It's dead.

Next time you jack it up, wedge a 17mm nut between the spring plate and the axle housing before you jack the car off the ground to keep the axles from dropping so low.
I found this pic in the gallery. Put the nut under the spring plate around where the circle is in this pic.

Roll it back and fourth a little, it will come down...... or just drive it. No biggy, that always happens when you have the wheels off the ground.

I'd be afraid of that nut shooting out and hitting me in the face or in the crotch; you know, Murphy's Law and all that.

Wear a helmet.. and a cup.

I've smashed a few cheapo 17mm nuts but I've yet to be hit in the nuts with a nut.

Thanks for the help. I knew the Samba could put my mind at ease.

You can also use a couple of the old pedal rods where you attach the accelerator cable too, they go in the same place and just fall out when u set it down, great trick for doing axel boots!!

No need for a cup either....

That's hysterical, only cuz last year I had a shop put on my summer tires (too lazy to do it myself). Anyway, gave the shop a wrong tire (doesn't hold air). Next day, I have to change the tire. Quick pump up the tire, and get the car out to jack up the rear, change the tire and of course car looks like hell with the tires canted in. Not 20 seconds go by and a woman walks by and says "nice car, why do the tires go in like that?" So, I said - "hang on" and I sat in the car & rolled it and problem solved - she just looked at me like I was the devil or something.
