So what is the typical next step when the beetle hesitates on start off and shift changes ?
I have adjusted the valves, set timing to 7.5 btc static and it idles perfect and starts just fine.
When I try to accelerated I have to almost rev it up and ride the clutch or it bogs down a lot. When I shift it is the same thing bogs down until RPM are up a bit. After I am going and the RPMs are up a bit its fine
any Ideas ?
Thanks |

What kind of distributor do you have - vacuum or mechanical advance?
From the cip website: "For best results, we recommend that you DO NOT use a "009" mechanical advance distributor with the 30 or 34-PICT carburetor. The "009" Bosch mechanical advance distributor does not advance until the engine RPM's have increased, but the Stock (or near stock) Beetle/Ghia 13-1600cc engine with stock carburetor requires advance the instant the throttle peddle is pressed. With a "009", this results in a large flat spot (or hesitation) when you leave a stop sign. This is not a problem with the carburetor and CAN NOT fixed by adjusting the carburetor." |

| Thanks for the tips so far. The distributor is a stock vacuum advance unit. If it only happens in midrange does the carb need adjusting ? I have also replaced the plugs and set the points |

| "this results in a large flat spot (or hesitation) when you leave a stop sign" is a great way to describe the problem |

| Ck or replace the vacuum advance on the side of the distributor. They fill up with crud and the inside can deteriorate. |

| Also could be a lean fuel problem, dirty carb or accel. pump. |

| Hank, if you have a vacuum pump, hand held, attached the vacuum line to the canister on the distributer, remove the cap and apply vacuum, make sure the canister moves and holds vacuum,if not, replace canister |
