Ok, I have been looking for a shift lock for my 1960 convertible and recently I was offered what has been said to be a NOS shift lock.
The guy who sells it is quite well known in the Dutch aircooled scene and has a good reputation. He claims he bought a couple of NOS shift locks about 20 years ago. He has send me one of the locks to check it out. I was hoping to receive what was clearly a Sperrwolf lock but here’s what it looks like
I can’t help it but to me it looks very much like the reproductions which are offered by several companies. :?
Here’s an example from an other thread ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=372643&start=0 )
These repro locks go for something like $99. I was offered the so called NOS lock for about twice that much.
The lock I got has no brand name or number on it and it came without a box or manual. The only thing that is different from the common repros is the VW logo on the keys.
Could this be NOS or is there a difference in repros (is there such a thing as early repro?). What would it be worth?
Thanks for any replies.

Didn't the original VW shiftlocks also have an electrical plug that plugged into the shifter and the wires went up into the wiring harness. I thing the ignition switch?
I have an shiftlock but no electrical plug. Anybody got an extra plug?

| The VW/Sperrwolf came both with or without ignition wires. Any pics of your lock? |

| If it does not have the VW symbol cast in both sides of the upper top, it is then a repro. |

| The lock you're considering is a new manufactured piece. I've got several examples of lockers and they all have a VW logo, except the WASO models |

^Sweet! Yours? I've seen that pic pop up at several threads on shift locks.
Thanks for your replies. I already expected it is not original. Too bad. |

Yes, that's one of mine. Found it at a local car gathering. Too bad the original box was water damaged beyond even display purposes |

That particular shift lock came with a built-in ignition switch. You insert the key to unlock the shifter. Then you continue turning the key & it will activate the inboard ignition switch.
There is another SperWolf locker that is the exact same shape as this one, but without the ignition feature. This is the style that has been copied to manufacture the latest shift locks that are available for about $80 |

Other them the electrical wire was there any other component, you need to hook up to the ignition switch? Think you could send me a copy of the manual so I could wire mine in?
Thanks Geoff |

| I've seen Mexican glove box locks or decklid locks can't remember that had those same rubber tipped keys with the VW emblem. |

Thanks Geoff
There is an onboard ignition switch located inside the locker housing, completely bypassing the ignition switch in the dash. |

Some hijack going on here! Maybe I should change the title in: "Ask all your shift lock questions here"
Haha, just kidding. As long as it serves the Vdub community! :vw:

I view part of the OP's question differently.
To most of us NOS means New Original Stock. By this use of terms- the seller is wrong.
To alot of people new to collector car hobby, NOS means New Old Stock- by this use or misuse of terms- the seller is a little right (given 20 years).
I give people the benefit based on their age/experience- then if they still resist their education I lambaste them til they throw themselves in front of the nearest logging truck. |

So I found an original (I think) Waso 503 N lock at the Techno Classica in Essen yesterday and I figured I use my own thread for my next questions.
Here’s some pics to begin with
Now my car, a 60 convertible, will not be finished for a couple of months so I will not be installing it any soon but I do have some questions.
First of all, will this lock fit my December 1959 Beetle convertible? I have a stock shifter btw.
Second, the lock came without any instructions but I found an English translation in the gallery (thanks, John Moxon)
Do I really need the spring and base disc (step 2) or can I install the lock without them? If necessary any ideas where I can get them?
Last, would it be wise to blast the lock and powder coat it like my shifter and seat frames etc. or does it need other treatment to repaint it?
Thanks for any advice
Marcel
Oh, and hitest you hit the nail regarding the shift lock that was offered to me at first. New Old Stock according to the seller e.g old, never used but not necessarily original which could be any aftermarket item that has been laying around for a while. :? I agree it should be New ORIGINAL Stock. |
