Problem below IS the electrical part of the ignition switch. With the engine running in the ON position, I wiggled the connector and could reproduce the problme at will. So the ON contact is going after 30 plus years. With a bunch of keys weighing the switch down is all that was needed to make it fail so now I'm driving around with the ignition switch key installed. I ordered a replacement switch (electrical portion only- and keeping the orginal lock set) for 10 bucks.
Thanks fo your help!
John
For the past few weeks for some reason our 1979 SB FI engine just shuts off. This happens when the engine is warmed up, at traffic lights and at 35 mph. I restart the engine and fires right up and will not fail again for another few days to a week. I've wiggled ignition switch while the engine is running but I can't reproduce the failure...I've just tuned up the engine and runs great. The above problem happended prior to and after the tune up.
Last week, I replaced the double relay mainly because it's the orignal double relay but with the new Bosh relay the engine has shut down once. Looking over the Bentley manual it talks about how the double relay works so I think I'm on the right track, i.e. wiring in these circuits.
Any thoughts?

Just for laughs, I would take a good look at the back side of the fuse panel to be sure that all of the quick disconnects (particularly the circuits that are energized at all times and those with the ignition on) are secure
Sometimes these connections can "loosen up" over time and cause intermittent interruptions like you've described.
Good luck, Mondshine |

| Funny u should mention the keys weighn down on the ignition, wise man told me long time ago, if u want a trouble free ignition switch for a long time. U should have a seperate key for ur ignition other wise the weight of the rest of the stuff u have on there(being other keys house keys key chain mini flashlight etc etc). Will have a effect on the switch in the long run . So every since I have seperate key chains one for misc keys and such and the other for just the keys for the car. Glad u solved ur problem |
