Hi All

I'm still in the process of correct the various mistakes of the previous PO and collect the various little parts that I need. I have a couple of question relating to the air cleaner for a '79 SB Vert.

In the first photo, is there something missing where the green arrow is pointing, a cap or the like?

In the second photo, does something connect to the port/connector that the yellow arrows is pointing to?

The hose that red arrow points to, is this a vacuum hose? What is the diameter? Mine is cracked an needs replacing.

Thanks
Greg

First picture is normal...nothing connects to this port. Second picture...there should be a hose from the back of the oil fill that connects to one of the ports the air box. CAUTION: If you install a hose be sure to fit an elbow on the end that connects to the oil fill or the engine WILL blow oil out of the dip stick and other areas...the kink will cause the engine crankcase pressure to build up. The other hose goes from the auxilary air pump up to the T hose connector located on and under the black S rubber boot.

Sorry not sure about the hose sizes...

(Whoops, responded to the wrong post --Edited)

Hi Greg. I believe that size is 12mm or 15mm. I have a 78 FI, and I ordered my hoses from airheadparts.com. I ended up ordering some 3.5 (lots, about 15 ft.), 4.5, 9mm, and 12mm hose. Chances are that there are more cracked hoses.

Regarding your earlier post, The hose to the distributor is 3.5mm, and the other side (the green hose) is 4.5mm. A lot of the emissions hoses around the fuel tank also use the 3.5 and were cracked.

BTW, I just went and looked, and on my air box there are two of those connections you mentioned within 2" of each other, and neither one is hooked up to anything. Not sure if it's relevant or not.

While there in no offical VW vaccum / emissions point to ponit connection/visual diagrams I can find for the fuel injection VW's...the 2 ports about 2 inches apart on the air cleaner box,...the best I can figure out is a hose goes between the oil filler and a air cleaner box (either port) and another hose goes from the back of the black S rubber tube to the other port on the air cleaner. I have this hose blocked up with a spark plug...regadless these hoses have no effect on the engine's performance.

BTW-90 percent of the fuel injection problems I've found is caused by worn out hoses...beware of cloth covered old hoses hiding cracked rubber hoses.
