So this is my new bus. I love to see Dove blue double cabs polished up with a little primer showing through. But I think this all white with heavy rust just looks like ASS! :?
I think I am going to have to go with a re-paint, prolly not the OG color unless somebody can post a picture of a "nice" patina look on a Pearl White Panel or otherwise. Thanks and proced with the insults. 8) |

VWJedi,
If you look at how bad my pearl white Virgina bus looked before repaint and after with the stock color you may change your mind on color choice. Just repaint with epoxy the same color as you will keep your investment where it should be. I really like how mine came out. I say this not only because I prefer to keep vintage anything as stock looking as possible but because you will always see the old color somewhere ether in corners, pockets or worse yet scrapes over time. Enjoy your new bus and again congratulations.
Also I think its time to upgrade your avatar to a Split Bus image

Linda,
I agree that your re-paint does look great. However I'm just not a big fan of white. (sorry :? ) and the befor pic supports my thoughts that the "patina" look just doesn't flow with PW. I'd love to see a finished product pic of your bus too, looks like you are doing a serious resto.
Any other thoughts? Mine is a Sundial camper so came from the factory as a panel with primered interior so not much white will be "poking through here and there".
BTW- I still love my Vanagon, I know she an H2O cooler, but I am riding over the wheels and the motor is in the back and I refuse to sell another bus. 8) Maybe I'll "upgrade" the avatar later. |

Lotsa crusty Pearl White busses out there.
I'm leaning towards L345 Light grey for the repaint. It won't match the M-code but is stock color for the year and model and I could spray the center caps the right color while I'm at it. |

I agree too.. My bus was pearl, but I really do not like any of the 66 panel colors...
The blue/white deluxe looks ok but again, not really what I want...
I am leaning towards Dove Blue.. Maybe do the top in PW... But panels were not 2 tone... So what to do what to do....
Were future camper panels base coated in the engine compartment? |

I understand vwjedi, I am not a fan of pearl white ether (I wish she was blue & white like my first bus) but it does grow on me and financially down the road it was a good choice. Because your bus is gray inside you will have an easier time with a different color and the white base is better than say blue to cover.
72ghiaman, I sent the bus for the welding & body/paint work because my garage was too small to do the work in. It took 1 1/5 years to complete because my bus was not a priority as I hoped it was. If my garage was bigger I could have had it done a lot sooner.
Read and look at other resto posts to learn body assembly of the Split bus to do the work right. Be sure to only buy Gerson's Funky Green metal replacement as all others do NOT fit correctly and you will become frustrated. Read the Body/paint forums for tips see the post below I used ppg epoxy.

Whites not that bad if it`s new and shiny it was pearl now pastel L-90 long story. One thing about white it looks clean when its clean and looks shitty when dirty.

I thought since the title said patina I would post pics of an OG paint Bus. I found it in the desert 3 years ago & have been collecting the missing parts since then. She is about to be completed for this summer use.
She is 95% OG paint. Very highly optioned B42 Westy. Had OG EMPI side step, front steps, side scoops, speed shift kit, under under dash gas heater, OG bumper guards, curb feelers front & back on the passanger side, radio, roof rack, tent, front tire mount (now removed), & truck mirrors (now removed).

I say keep it original. With some CLR and elbow grease that thing will look way better. Check out this thread:

Faster, looks good yes agreed on the clean/dirty factor.
Blackdog1999, looks nice I’ll have to look up the B42 options, hey does she clear the roof rack into the garage? I still prefer your camper bus what is that called?
Ricecooker, nice thread although with nice weather and much to do on my bus I’ll leave the reading for the sun to set but I will read it all. Quick question I cleaned my factory rubber mat for the cab yesterday with something similar to CLR because it has chunks of small rust stains on the rubber. It didn’t come off any tips? I am going to use a jewelers magnifier today to see if it is small chunks of rust laying on the mat and try and chip off but I think it is just stained.

I had no idea CLR could remove that rust but what kind of rust lays on paint not in the metal? And is CLR better than what I have I just looked at the bottle it is called LimeAway for rust & lime.

Thank you for the compliment Mark.
Westy B42 option M code = poptop, roof rack, & tent
No the rack unfortunately does not clear. It is only a 7' garage door.
Here is a pic of the Bus the day I brought it to my house to start working on her.

Silly me mine is a B42 also. Too bad it doesn't clear the garage I have the same problem. Nice work.
I love the beauty next to her what did you say those mobile home VW's were called?
