Trying to get an autostick project back together. There is a hose that comes from the bottom of the unit underneath the passenger side rear fender. This hose comes into the engine compartment and behind the fan shroud. Currently this hose is disconnected and I can't seem to find a place it should go. There is a open fitting on the top of the fan shroud, but it doesn't seem to line up with the length and existing bends of the hose.
Also, the unit under the fender has an open fitting out the top, should this be connected to anything? |

dnbuggy,
You need to find posts by Bookwus as I believe it is for an emissions charcoal filter.
Mike can fill you in on the gory details (we over here in Oz weren't burdened with it) as he even owns a '70 Autostick.

Hiya dnb,
The unit underneath your rear fender is the emissions canister for the M-26 emissions system. There are actually three hoses that connect up to the emissions canister.
Two of these hoses are 12 mm braided hosing originating in the engine compartment. Sounds from your description as if you have one of those hoses - probably the one that needs to be hooked up to your air filter. The other 12 mm hose does hook up to the port you've noticed on the fanshroud.
Lastly, if you poke around that emissions canister you'll see a smaller third port (about 3 mm) that needs to connected to the hosing/tubing run from the gas tank expansion chamber. Take a look under the pan and in the channel that runs along the edge of the pan you should see the tubing run for this connection. |

Hiya dnb,
I am sure that you will get responses to your question advising you to scuttle the M-26 system. Can that be done? Yes it can.
But before you do that consider this...........
The M-26 (in operable condition) uses no horsepower whatsoever. With it in place you will get the same performance and economy as without it. The M-26 system is not passive. It actively draws loose hydrocarbons (generally regarded as a cancer causitive and the source of the "gassy smell" when you do have a leak somewhere) into the carburetor for burning. Every car with a gassy smell that I have seen has had the M-26 system compromised in some way.
Your call on making the system work or trashcanning it. |

If you do decide to do away with the emissions canister, there is a right way and a wrong way (and of course if your state laws REQUIRE it to be there then you should use it).
The way to avoid the fuel smells after the emissions canister and hoses are removed is to connect all the vent lines at the rear of the tank (up to three of them) to a single line which should then be T'ed so you can vent high on the fuel filler line itself or the larger breather tube near it, and the third leg of the T (the actual vent) has a thin rubber tube running up and over the instrument cluster to make a high point in the venting and then down the left side of the fuel tank - there might be a slot in the bodywork there, and out under the car to hang loose roughly in the area of the Master Cylinder in LHD cars.
The up and over vent line is the key to avoiding fuel smells. Vented fuel caps and short vent lines down the RIGHT side of the tank will always result in fuel smells with a full tank and especially in left hand corners. With this replacement vent system in place, the expansion tank up front and the charcoal canister down the back can be removed. The vent in the fan shroud should be plugged so it doesn't leak cooling air and the vent in the stock paper air cleaner (under the main air inlet) should be plugged too. The long vent line under the car can be left in place unused.
I've added a diagram to the bug-superbug gallery called "tank venting" which might help.

| Wow, thanks for the info. at this point, i think i will just keep it as there appears to be no downside to the system and serves a good purpose! |
