So a few months ago my passenger rear drum was grinded away from my spinning axle because i didnt tighten the axle nut.. hard to explain ill find that thread and link it so you know what i mean..

anyways im in Bardon, Oregon and i think the same problem has occured.. but this time i went to take the axle nut off and the entire axle is spinning with the nut... i took a look under and looks like some tranny fluid is on the underside of the transmission but im not sure if that is related to this problem at all..

but its hard to tell by myself if the axle is spinning freely when i give gas or if the drum is stripped again im not sure.

i just went to napa, and they have no rear drums.. but there is a junk yard another mile or so down the road he said so im going to check them out on monday.. atleast im in a good spot to sleep with internet so ill be online untill i can get back on the road

so if any samba masters are close that would be awesome! but any and all advice is always helpful.. thanks guys!

I don't quite understand what problem you are having here. The wheel turns with the axle? Well, that is the whole point isn't it? That is why the axle and drum have splines. If it doesn't, then you have real problems. Next time, loosen the nut before removing the wheel and tire and chock the wheels. It is much easier that way..........Peace and Love. :-k :bay_red:

thats just it.. there are no splines! the drum is completely smooth on the inside! and the first time it happened it was because i didnt tighten the nut hard enough.. THIS time its because the drum was not on all the way it was about 1/4 inch off and basically just vibrated its way to where the axle grinded away at the splines ...

its all good tho.. ive made contact with Brian and he is just waiting for a ride down here to bring me a a replacement drum i should be back on the road soon im stoked!!

thanks all for your help again this trip wouldnt be possible without this site

if the drum is stripped is the CV ok? i would have thought that the CV would strip before the drum.

Say hello to Brian from Pat in Bend... glad it's going to work out for you.

Dude, I have been watching your err… progress  This is most certainly not the way you hoped your dream would unfold, but let me just encourage you to hang in there. It seems that many of these adventures have a lot of adversity in the beginning, but then tend to mellow out as they go on. While it has been a while since I was on the road, the coolest things that happened to me happened while I was broke down. Just enjoy the journey…even when you are not moving!

Are the splines on the axle still good?

Please do it by the book this time. The manual is an essential part of a good dream.

Dream on. Whatever helpful method you've used in the past failed you.

VVV good one SG. VVV

just a small thought. If one took a poll here from all the usual suspects who have given answers that solve issues, and asked them in that poll how they learned about those things, my guess is the #1 answer would be the Bentley.

Re your bus - do you know how much torque to apply to that nut without risking it being too loose or too tight?
