The bug i have now is the red one.

I'm thinking of buying the yellow one for 900.

the yellow one has a 1600 dp, 009 dist., holly carb and needs breaks, new steering column, and the carb cleaned.

I'm thinkin I could just switch over my disc brakes and steering column and use my engine in the yellow one while i get the guts of the baja motor sorted out. and then just sell whats left of the red bug.

the yellow one needs a bit of cleanup but i thought i'd just throw it up here and see what y'all think.

please refrain from paying $900 for that unless it has perfect floors and heater channels.

bookoojoe Sat Mar 20, 2010 6:56 pm

the driver side floor is original and solid. the passenger side floor was cut out and welded in with sheet metal, the seat rack welded to the sheet. and the heater channels are quite solid. looked it all the way through and didn't find much rust

Supers suck as bajas.

bookoojoe Sat Mar 20, 2010 7:00 pm

do they really? why's that?

millerje78 Sat Mar 20, 2010 7:12 pm

the front end suspension is set up for the road.

everything is...even 4x4s.

BUT.. yea.. the struts and all.. I was looking at some people who dun it. The springs/shocks are not available to do it easily.

BUT.. if you check out the manx dual sport.. they do it.

bookoojoe Sat Mar 20, 2010 7:25 pm

i wasnt going to take it off road. just put some big ol wheels on and have it be my daily

bob67firebird428 Sat Mar 20, 2010 7:39 pm

If you're not going to go offroad I dont think there's too much of a problem, but sometimes it can be hard to get things like baja fiberglass for a super.

You'll take it off-road sooner or later. And why drive one if it's not going to be used for it's intended purpose? Big tires eat fuel, and Baja-Supers are sketchy.

Your car though. Do what you like, and be happy! But buy a cage.

The front ends on 4x4s don't fold like a hot dog bun if you hit a pot hole, either.

zeroman Sat Mar 20, 2010 10:21 pm

well yea.. but both bugs are weak. Just got to baja it. Which might mean a bunch of strut re-enforcement.

and weak.. yes.. but weighted in the back. The idea is to skim the surface with the front wheels.

Have a ball.

You don't just 'reinforce' the front on a super then suddenly it's grand. More like "chop the entire front off and replace it" and it's grand. You can't just 'skim the front tires' on a 3000 pound car. The point is, the front end on a super is not nearly strong enough for everyday activities let alone going 'off road'. Unless the offroad you're talking about is a gravel road, even then i'd take it as slow as possible.

3000lbs?! Is this a cement mixer beetle? try more like 2100 on the high side.

Also, take it slow on gravel!? WTF? The car is just as strong as a normal super which would do fine on that.

The the super is inferior is the front suspenion, yes, but here's why. The VW beam axle (that's on a standard) Is fucking beast, it'll take a lot a bashing, mainly because the trailing arms not only move up but back a little teeny bit when you hit something with a front wheel, which makes for an easy move over objects. The struts on the other hand or first off not as strong but more importantly, don't move that tiny bit front or back. Third, they don't have a forwards backwards type reinforcement. Like this

Super's wheels: |o-- ---o| (o's are struts)

Standards wheels:__________
-----------------|-----------| - trailing arms
----------------|-------------| - wheel
(dang it messed up my drawing, so dashes are spaces, allright?)
(yeah yeah, it's not beautiful and detailed but whatever)
See how the standard has those trailing arms that reinforce front back? Well the super doesn't have those.
4x4's do have much more beefy a arms vs the strut's single control arm and strut setup.

That's the way I look at it.

Do you just hate Supers?

Super as a baja ... maybe as a looker. Too weak for off-road ... sure ... but too weak for everyday activities?

Yeah, then you could put cool flame decals on it, and play a looped tape of a v8 so everyone thinks it's way super fast! If you're going to be a poser, make sure noone finds out that you're, being a poser. That big curved windshield, or the struts that will be easily visible are a huge giveaway. It's like putting fake portholes on the fenders, or a big stupid wing on a geo metro.

I don't hate supers, I'm pointing out that its VW's first try at a macpherson front suspension, and it sucks. Do a search on bent front end parts on supers, see how many threads you get. I'm sure it works great for some people.
