View original topic: Need oil temp sensor that screws into dual pressure relief. Goto page 1, 2  Next

1600 dual port case. AH motor. I have the autometer oil temp guage currently. The guage sensor is screwed into a tee along with the stock oil pressure switch . The tee is installed in the stock pressure switch hole in the case. I dont think its the best way to go. Id like to purchase one of those oil sensors that replaces the dual relief plug. Im not even sure the sensor will work with the autometer guage. Been searching for over an hour getting a headache.
Does anyone know where to get this sensor, or sensors? Id like to try both type of sensors to see which one I like best. Wolfsburgwests search bar finds no results. I thought they were the ones that carried the sensors. Someone correct me if the dual oil pressure relief isnt the best way to go but Ive read on these posts that its better than the stock switch location.

There's nothing wrong with it.

I have a Tee with a mechanical oil pressure line and the stock sender.

hmmmk, cool. I thought due to the sender being an inch or two, from the hole, it would read cooler. I drove in the winter time when it was 20 to 30 degrees out and the oil temp didnt get over 130 or 140, so thats why I assumed it was just the senders location. Now thats freeway driving of over 2 hours. Shouldnt my temp be at least 180 after 2 hours?

OK... I missed that it was a oil temp sender. You should not put a temp sender at the oil pressure sender hole. Better locations are in the sump place, oil cooler bypass relief port and other places.

My temp sender is in the remote oil filter base.

Also don't assume the gauge is accurate, mine reads 40 degrees higher than it actually is.

Ok so I was right then. Now where do I get these sensors at? Also do I have to get the guage with the sensor or just the sensor, be it oil drain plug or dual pressure relief plug type?

Here you go, http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VDO%2D323%2D064

mintonman Sat Mar 20, 2010 8:28 pm

probably have to use a VDO guage though

quartermilecamel Sat Mar 20, 2010 8:34 pm

Wow that was my problem, I was typing in sensor instead of sender. Cool. Sender ready to order now in my cart. Which one will fit the oil drain plug? I tried pulling up cip1's oil drain plug but it didnt list a size. Do you know which one will fit? Im going to get both the relief sender and the drain plug sender. Just need the correct sender to order for the size.

quartermilecamel Sat Mar 20, 2010 8:46 pm

I think I just found it. M14 x 1.5. So all I have to do is order a sensor that size.

quartermilecamel Sat Mar 20, 2010 9:10 pm

ok thanks a bunch, both senders ordered.

Sorry I didn't get to answer you Quartermile, I ended up crashing early lastnite. Hope the senders work out for you.

Why both? Are you planning to try both spots and see which you like better?

quartermilecamel Sun Mar 21, 2010 3:49 pm

exactly, yes I want to see which I like better.

Sounds good to me. :) Let us know what you think, after you have a chance to evaluate them.

From what I've read, the relief plug location is alleged to be better, supposedly a little more accurate than the other locations, and the drain plug spot can be annoying because you have to disconnect it every time you want to remove the plug to drain the oil. I haven't installed mine yet (the relief plug one) but hope to get do it this spring after some other projects.

Good luck!

If you use the oil drain plug kind, next time you pull the engine you need to disconnect the wire before putting a jack under it. Also, you might want to drill a hole in a 2x4 piece of wood and place that between the jack and the motor, so the hole protects the sender.
Otherwise you will probably need a new sender.

if you have a universal case for type 1,2 and 3 then drill and tap the type3 blockoff and put it there. :D

quartermilecamel Sun Mar 21, 2010 11:24 pm

No its not a universal case. I just remember the case having AH on it. Hm and come to think of it Ive had the oil filter combination on there for over 10 years. I have never cleaned the screen since. Is it customary to still clean the screen or maybe remove it?
Wow, claras block of wood just sunk in. Id have to either drain the oil and leave the sensor out or do the hole in the wood thing. although I wonder if the wood can be made to better support and stable the engine. Naw Im probably better off making or buying one of those fancy jacks in the jack discussion threads. Yep, starting to slide twards the relief plug. Final test will be the temperatures, I do have a lazer digitial temp reader. Not sure how accurate they are. Its from autozone. 19.95 if I remember correctly.

haha I was about to say that, I learned that the hard way many years ago on my bug..

both sensors have arrived. Will post temperature differences when I go get a vdo guage and try the sensors.

Got up enough motivation to install the dual oil pressure relief sensor, and started wondering if I need a special tool to get the plug out. Finally saw a special tool in the gallery that fits on a ratchet.
The age of this motor begins in 1995 when I purchased the long block from so cal imports. So its had plenty of time for the plug to get stuck in there. Question is, should I even attempt to remove the plug with a screwdriver, or are these plugs in there too tight for a screwdriver to remove them?
