I"m learning more and more that sometimes what seems like a good idea to me has probably been tried before and I may be able to learn from someone's past experience!
I've been hearing of lots of guys "hot dipping" stuff to clean it up....
rusty brake backing plates....want them cleaned up to paint.....is hot dip the right procedure? or should I stick with media blasting like I would usually do?
Is hot dipping a rust stripping process?
Thanks! |

I've heard hot dipping only in reference to removing paint, grease, gunk, etc, but not rust. Not sure if it works on rust. Have to wait until someone who has had it stops by.
You could always do an electrolytic bath to remove the rust:

scroll down a bit on that link and you'll see it. I've read this working incredibly well on removing rust. |

| Get them media blasted. Easy, cheap, fast, done. |

| Hot dipping will NOT remove any rust. It is usually sodium hydroxide, which is a base. Acid will remove rust, but not caustic (hot dip). Hot dip will also disolve aluminum. |

Thanks for the info guys....think I'll be media blasting in order to clean up the rust and then shoot them with primer and black.
